Technological innovations
The terms “technology”, “innovation” and “organizations” don’t work on their own. We look
at the interplay of these terms.
Innovation often spurred by technology
Innovation and technology affect organizations
Organizations affect efficient and effective use of technology
Organizations affect innovation
o Oftewel: If you change one part of an organization’s process, all of the
processes in the organization will change.
alle kleuren verandering in sales processes, IS, organization en IT
Conclusion
Innovations may completely change the way an organization functions
When thinking of new technology or other innovations, you should always take the
characteristics of the organization into account
Defining innovation
Innovation = using an invention (something new) to create impact
Innovation = is the process of applying or implementing something new and useful.
College 2: Innovation Typologies, Innovation
Management, and Open Innovation
Innovation process
Exploration: Idea -> object -> practice
This process is called the “innovation funnel”. From many ideas to ultimately few
innovations in practice.
Innovation is more often a group process.
o Within departments (R&D), across departments, or even outside the
organization
Innovation Types
4 P’s of innovation
Product/service innovation
o Product innovation
o Service innovation
Bv: supermarket delivery
Process innovation
o Constant refining and improving methods and procedures for product quality
and customer service
Bv: Dell, customers could customize their computers
Bv: Netflix, renting movies, but now online
Business model innovation (=position)
o Bv: portable music players
Paradigm innovation (=strategy)
o It changes the underlying mental models that frame what the organization
does, e.g. what an employee does, how customers use it
Bv: Uber
If you change one thing in an organization, other P’s will also change.
Interplay between Innovation Technology & organizations
Innovations are often technological innovations that affect how organizations organize
themselves, for example…
New information systems change procedures and make an organizational more or
less formal
Social media has changed customer interactions
Social media allows more flexibility in working together across time, space, and
structures
RFID and augmented reality change supply chain
Technology to support organizations may change what an organization entails /
definition of an organization
Innovation Typologies
Dichotomous typology
, Disruptive innovation
o New product, new market
Incremental innovation
o Variation of something that already exists
Matrix typology
Niche creations: existing technology, new
market
o Bv: children’s tablets
Architectural innovations: new
technology, new market
o Bv: first iPhone
Regular innovations: existing technology, existing market
o Bv: Generations of smartphones
Revolutionary innovations: new technology, existing market
o Bv: from mechanic to electronic typewriter
Innovation management
The tension between organizations & the innovation
Efficient gains will be achieved in organizations with stable and controlled
environments
Creativity gains will be achieved in organizations with a loose and flexible
environment
Open innovation & crowdsourcing
Closed vs. open innovation model
Closed innovation model Open innovation model
In traditional innovation ideas are generated IN the organization, and are then
funneled to the market.
