Diversity in Ages on Campus Radical Revision: A Letter of Appeal for Change
The issue of age diversity on college campuses is something that should be taken more
seriously if we are all to become truly diverse. The reason that I chose to write about this subject
are for somewhat obvious reasons. I am what is called a “non-traditional age student” since I am
older than most of the students on campus. I attend classes full-time, work full-time, and raise
my two sons just to name a few of the responsibilities I have outside of campus. However, many
of the programs and societies that college campuses invest time and money into are focused
primarily on the younger generation students, and feel that administrators could give more
attention to “non-traditional age” students.
Walking down the halls of the campus, it became apparent to me that I was surrounded
by students that were much younger than me. Although I have to say that I have been treated
very fairly, there have been times that I have felt different being around a younger generation of
students. In fact, being around these students and the energy that they have has invigorated me to
do the best that I can.
I have to say that after twenty years it was very difficult to come back to school, and keep
pace with most of the changes that have taken place since I was last in academics. Some of those
being the use of computers, cell phones, and social media just to name a few. I have been around
for many of the most significant advances in technology during my lifetime, and have embraced
the changes that follow. Not only that, but the experiences I have had from life has taught me
more than I could learn in any classroom.
I don’t want to be treated any differently than any of you, however what I do wish to
express is how important it is to recognize our differences any embrace them together. This is
, what diversity is about. Knowledge is what binds us together, and what all of us are searching
for. What I have learned in my years is something that I feel can benefit not only me, but
everyone around me. I am sure that many of you have had experiences that would benefit all of
us as well, and we could all learn from them together. By creating an opportunity for discussion
on these topics, administrators could utilize an opportunity for learning by creating more clubs
focused on “non-traditional age” students.
I realize that diversity is not about making a group of people better or worse than the
other, but creating equality for everyone by coming together as one group. Instead of breaking
each other down into groups, we really only need one. If we can do that, eventually there would
be no need to diversify in the first place.
