How is synthesis different to Analysis?

Synthesis is a higher process that creates something new. It is usually done at the end of an entire study
or scientific enquiry. Analysis is like the process of deduction wherein a bigger concept is broken down
into simpler ideas to gain a better understanding of the entire thing.

Synthesis definition: The combination of ideas to form a theory or system. The process of making
compound and derivative words. The use of inflected forms rather than word order to express
grammatical structure.

How to write a good introduction to an argument:

 Explain what the topic is.
 Defend your topic.
 Explain pros/cons and why some people may disagree with your topic.
 Give the reader an insight on what they are about to read.
 Write a stimulating (encouraging) sentence that will leave the readers wanting more.

To make your argument hook the reader the entire way through reading you could add these:

 Dynamic verbs: Used primarily to indicate an action, process, or sensation. Also referred to as an
Action Verb
 Modal verbs: An auxiliary verb that expresses necessity or possibility. Include must, shall, will,
should, would, can, could, many and might.
 Synonyms: Substitutes for a word that mean similar or the same thing. E.g., Synonyms for
Wasteful: Lavish, reckless, excessive, carless, useless, needless, prodigal, uneconomical.
Task:

1. Practice using Synthesis in a sentence or paragraph to improve the introduction of your
argument.
2. Use some of the techniques listed above in another introduction paragraph to get used to
writing a good introduction to an argument.
