For this D1 I will be suggesting in what ways Harrods can improve the motivation of their employees,
I will also justify these recommendations.
1. Harrods can improve the motivation of its employees by making Harrods into a partnership
when doing this the employees will know everything within Harrods and can adapt their style
of work. When making a partnership of Harrods people don’t only have something to say
about Harrods but there is also a financial motivator, this can be a bonus at the end of the
year or something different like doing something with the employees if it was a good year for
Harrods. This will motivate the employees because they have a bigger responsibility besides
their job of keeping Harrods running. This way of motivating links with two of the motivation
technique, the motivation technique of Taylor because Harrods offers their employee a
financial motivator. This way of motivating also links with the motivation technique of Mayo,
because his technique stats that employees want something to say within a business, have
better communication to them. With making Harrods a partnership this will be achieved
because the employees are partly owner of Harrods, so they definitely got something to say
within Harrods. And the communication towards employees is better because they get an in-
depth look in let’s say the financial of Harrods, again because there are partly owners of
Harrods. A prime example of doing this is the department store John Lewis, they also work as
a partnership and the employees feel very happy about that because they have a say in the

2. The second thing Harrods can do to improve the motivation of the employees is to let people
totally free in the times that they are working. This has a couple of great advantages like:
people don’t have a bad mood when coming to work. This will be because the employees can
make up the time that they would like to start, when doing this people can choose what
hours they want to work. As Harrods you could make a couple of rules like the minimum that
someone can work is 7 hours a day, when doing this you don’t let employees take advantage
of the rule. This will also be a great motivation for employees because they feel appreciated
and cared for because if they had a rough night they have a chance to sleep longer and there
won’t be any consequences. This type of motivation can be linked with the motivation theory
of Herzberg because a lot of his hygiene factors are in it like lower level of supervision,
because employees don’t get punished by being late (because that isn’t possible anymore)
and the working conditions get better because the employees have slept for a good amount
of time so they are able to work harder. Another advance of this type of motivation is that
people don’t look tired while working in the department store, because someone that looks
tired and is tired won’t do his job in a good way and in such a high and warehouse employees
should always look good and healthy. According to

illness and a happier life. When there are less people ill what work for Harrods, Harrods
doesn’t have to pay them while their sick but they aren’t able to work so this will reduce the
money that Harrods spends on it’s employees.
So for this D1 I have given two things that Harrods can do to improve the motivation for their
employees. I think that these solutions will be good for Harrods and therefore Harrods will keep their
doors open for a long long time.
