for this P5 I will be explaining how the employee performance is measured and managed at Harrods.
In this P I will be explaining two measuring methods and two managing methods.

Measuring methods:
 smart targets: smart targets are used to set objectives for employees. SMART stands for
Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-bound. Smart targets give a good view
on the sales and level of work that employees have to achieve. SMART targets can be used
for pass rates, sales targets, growth targets, waiting times etc. Harrods uses smart targets to
get a good view into what is going on in the business and give a clear sight in the targets that
Harrods has. SMART targets help employees to see what the targets are and how hard they
may need to work. I think using smart targets is very useful because it gives employees a
good view in what to do and when there are certain targets to be achieved people will work
harder to achieve these targets.
 Benchmarking: benchmarking is used to compare Harrods with other companies within the
same markets. The comparison is made between the company and the company within the
same market but it needs to be with a company that is doing better than you, this needs to
be done because than you can look what to change. Harrods uses this to see on what parts
they may need to improve. For Harrods it’s hard to compare with other companies because
they are already one of the best in their market, but one of the companies that they can
compare to is Fortnum and Mason. I think benchmarking is a very useful measuring method
because it directly shows on what parts Harrods might need to improve.

Managing methods;
 Probation: probation is the time after an employee gits hired, probation often is for the time
of one month. Within the probation time the employer and the employee can break the
contract without any knowledge. Within this time the employee shows the employer what
he got and the way he works, within probation the employee is closely monitored by the
employer. Harrods also uses probation within their organisation, they do this to look if an
person suits the job and if he is capable of working in such a high demanding store. I think
probation is a very good thing because it gives Harrods the chance to look at the employee
working without having them employed for a longer time. I also prevents Harrods from
spending a lot of money because if probation wasn’t a thing Harrods should give employees a
contract that they can’t easily break without seeing them work.
 Managing workloads: managing workloads is making sure that one certain employee doesn’t
have too much work and therefor too much pressure while working. Managing workloads
also helps to make sure that others don’t have anything to do while working and therefore
making work boring. Certain contract may help to easily manage the workloads of
employees this is because zero hours and casual contracts can call employees to work during
a busy period and send them home when that period is over. Harrods uses managing
workloads to make sure that their employees don’t get a burnout because of the huge
amount of work that they get. This will help to improve the working conditions because
everybody has got something to do all the time. I think managing workloads is critical of an
