The effect of the temperature on the rate of reaction
Abstract
2. Abstract (summary- what you did in your investigations, technique used, what were you
intending to find and brief description of results) (P6)
I have investigated and found three different methods and conducted a research based on them,
analysed the methods and chose the best fit for my practical experiment, I have analysed the
advantages and disadvantages of each method and chose the most suitable for me out of the three
analysed.
Tap water was chilled and the Alka Seltzer tablet was dropped in to dissolve, and the time was taken.
The beaker was emptied, and the boiling water was used to dissolve Alka Seltzer tablet, and the time
was recorded. The experiment was repeated three times with each hot, cold and warm water in
order to identify the effect of the temperature on the rate of reaction.
I was intending to find out how does the temperature affect the rate of reaction and the science
behind it.
There were three trials done, the temperatures and the results were mostly similar, the biggest time
difference between approximatively the same difference was 17 seconds.
The biggest temperature difference within the same category (hot, warm ,cold) was 5 degrees
celsius.
3. Hypothesis and null hypothesis (for data processing tests)
Hypothesis:
If the rate of reaction is proportional to the temperature of the water, the rate of reaction will be
faster if the water is warmer.
As the temperature rises, the number of atomic or molecular collisions between molecules
increases. The change in reaction rate with temperature, on the other hand, is not solely a function
of temperature. Increases in temperature have a predictable impact on reaction rate constants.
Null Hypothesis:
When the water temperature increases, the kinetic energy of the molecules also increases, the
kinetic energy shows how fast are the molecules of water vibrating, the faster they move, the more
energy they produce, the higher the temperature gets. As the kinetic energy increases, the
molecules vibrate faster, therefore the reaction rate will also increase as the molecules move faster.
, 4. First method
Equipment:
Beaker
Water (ice and tap)
6 Alka Seltzer tablets
Thermometer
Timer
Method:
100ml of tap water with ice should be chilled for two minutes
Using a thermometer, measure the temperature of the chilled water in a beaker
Drop one Alka Seltzer tablet into the beaker and start the timer to measure how long it takes
for the entire tablet to dissolve
Fill the beaker with 100ml of warm tap water and use a thermometer to measure the
water’s temperature.
Step 3 should be repeated
Bring at least 250ml of water to a boil
Fill the beaker with boiled water and record the water’s temperature using a thermometer.
Step 3 must be repeated
Obtain a second set of data by repeating steps 1-5 after inputting your timed results into a
table
Calculate the mean of the two sets of data and enter it into your table
5. Preliminary (first run/initial) results in table with units (P5)
First trial results (time)
Cold (5 0C) 97 seconds
Hot (80 0C) 42 seconds
Warm (20 0C) 56 seconds
6. Updated method (If you had to change your method on the day or as you did your first practical-
learning from mistakes). This needs a justification- why did you change? (P6)
Didn’t update the method
7. Updated results in table (If the same as above then state this), justify decimal places and draw
at least one graph. (P5/P6)
