,Preface
This report is written as a register of my progress during my first internship. My name is
Róbin Jansen and I study hotel and event management at TIO University of Applied
Sciences in Utrecht, The Netherlands. This year I did my first internship in Splendid Hotel La
Torre in Palermo, Sicily. It was an amazing and special experience, but most of all, I learned
a lot. Being on your own in a different country teaches you a lot about the country, language
and yourself and besides that the internship company gave me the chance to explore my
professional attitude in the hotel business.
The internship was about learning new skills, working in a company as a young professional,
using learned theory in practice, working with systems, working with guests, exploring my
own skills and with all of that: reaching previously set goals.
I would like to thank:
TIO University, for giving me the opportunity to do this internship;
Jourike Nonkes, my study coach, for supporting me wherever she could and
understanding the ups and downs I went through;
My friends and family from The Netherlands for supporting me and visiting me;
My friends and family from Palermo for making this an amazing experience;
My amazing colleagues that made me feel like I was part of the family every day.

, Summary
The internship report is the final step of the internship and a way to measure the progress I
have made and see the findings that I did. The report is structured in a way that measures
my findings on the hotel, myself, the hotel business and more.
First of all there is the introduction about the hotel and the way I got to this specific
internship. I wrote about the fact that I did not find this internship through TIO’s network but
by contacting the hotel myself. In the introduction is also written that I have learned a lesson
by this. Finding an internship through a network like TIO’s is more safe than to find an
internship yourself. The reason for this is that I got into some issues with the hotel during my
internship which might not have happened if I found an internship that already worked with
TIO students in the past. For example certain points of the contract were not being handled
exactly as they should. Sometimes because all parties agreed to it and sometimes because
the hotel just had a different system than TIO.
Besides this I made a company assignment during the internship about Splendid Hotel La
Torre. In this chapter is written how the hotel is handling guest issues, how the mentality
within the team is in the hotel, what the history of the hotel is and what are the mission and
vision of the hotel. This assignment was very interesting to me since I did a lot of similar
activities in school and now I got to do it for a real existing hotel that I have worked for
myself.
The next chapter is about my professional attitude. The internship coach assessed me during
and in the end of the internship and I assessed myself before, during and after the internship.
This chapter is about the personal growth I have been through, the lessons I have learned
and the goals I have reached. I ended my internship with a score of 8,0/10 by my internship
coach.
The next chapter is about the online internship visit by my study coach at TIO, Jourike
Nonkes. During our online meeting we discussed my progress with my internship coach and I
also got to admit some issues that I felt during the internship. My study coach was there for
me during the internship and she understood my situation very well which made me feel
more comfortable doing the internship.
During the internship I also made a vlog to show some of my main activities in the hotel and
show some parts of the hotel itself. The video can be watched on YouTube by using the

In the end of the report I wrote my personal reflection on the internship. In this chapter I
describe my personal issues with the internship, the lessons I have learned and the goals I
have reached.
