C: Explore an effective leadership style when leading a team during sport and exercise activities.
Introduction
Our aims of the session was to teach people the basic skills of rugby such as passing. And to make
sure they are enjoying the session. The main objective was for everyone to have fun and learn the
skill of passing a rugby ball confidently and by the end of the session they will leave with a new skill
and some understanding of how to perform it and why and how to improve.
Session plan
Firstly, we need to introduce ourselves to the members of the group and explain our role in the
session and what we intend to demonstrate and teach during the session, and why, and to try also
to put group members at ease and make ourselves open and approachable.
We will begin with a warmup by doing a pulse raiser, hopefully this will encourage the group
members to relax before moving on to dynamic stretches and static stretches this will help to
prevent any injuries and prepare the group to perform the tasks we have planned. With one of us
continuing the warmup, the other coaches will set up the passing drill and get ready to teach the
group the very basic skill of passing and catching a rugby ball. Each member of the group will stand
approximately 3 feet apart opposite each other in pairs and will be encouraged to pass the ball to
each other with the chance to swop hands and pass left and right handed, we then plan to move
onto passing down the line and teaching the rules of passing. For example, the catching member of
the group needs to be slightly behind the passing member before they can release the ball to pass it
backwards. Communication needs to be good by the coaching staff. Movement can then be included
with light jogging and passing along the line to each other with a reminder of the rules for passing a
rugby ball and encouragement. We intend to ask group members how they feel about this progress
and how confident they feel from a static position to moving and passing and making sure the
receiver is behind the player passing the ball. This will make confirm how much the group is
understanding of our instruction.
We want to move on from that and increase the enjoyment of the group and not make it all the
same but keep the passing theme so the next activity will be 2 v 1, this will help the group get used
to passing and grow in confidence but also giving support to the player with the ball and should be a
bit more fun with room for mistakes but with no stress or pressure. This will be a simple 2 v 1, the 2
attackers must try to get past the 1 defender without being touched. We will need to explain that
the defending player will start 10m back but can move anywhere inside the box. The attacking
players must remain inside the box and all passes must be legal. This may raise questions from the
group that we need to be ready to answer.
At the end we will recap the session and what we did and what the group did and what they have
learned and ask if they have any questions and hope that they had a good time and feel like they
accomplished the aim of the session.
, Impact of my style of leadership
I think I used two forms of leadership which was transformational and situational. I wanted to be this
type of leader as I believe it was the better way to approach a group of people in a sport
environment and using both types of leadership mean I can take the best from both forms and
together be a more effective leader.
Transformational leadership is defined as a type that creates a change in individuals and social
systems which helps to create a positive change in others and allows them to develop and become
leaders themselves. I think this had started to happen during the session. Some of the group became
more confident and offered support to less able members, group members respond to this type of
leader with trust and respect, and I hoped this would be the outcome as I was there to lead and
teach a new group in learning a new skill. A transformational leader uses their leadership to
challenge others and gives confidence for them to try something for themselves, this would be ideal
in a sport session. A transformational leader uses inspiration and motivation and considers the
individual which is what I think I did. This is a benefit for the group members to have the confidence
to try the skill with the encouragement of a transformational leader and know that there is no high
expectation but that they are motivated to learn something new, and it wouldn’t matter if they
make a mistake.
I also used some situational leadership, this involves adapting my leadership to the situation which
was needed with a group of people and the task that changed naturally during the session but also
moving them on from warm up to passing a ball in a standing position and then jogging onto a 2 v 1.
Some members of the group were less able to coordinate themselves and picked up the new skills
not as well than others, everyone was at a different level of learning and so my situational leadership
allowed me to adjust to meet the needs of some of the group. Situational leadership is more flexible
and creates a comfortable environment and takes different development of others into account and
will help the team to work better together. I think I used this type of leadership well and it is a
benefit to all levels of skill in the group because I was able to adjust to each member and encourage
them to make their passing better or move into a more difficult situation to keep them motivated to
learn and improve and to keep their internet in the session.
I also used a democratic style of leadership this style used in sport is a behaviour by the leader that
encourages participation from the sports person or in this session a group of people learning a new
skill and being able to make decisions for themselves when trying to achieve the same thing
together. In this case it was passing a ball well and then adding movement and then onto a simple
attacking v defending, by being democratic I was able to encourage them to think for themselves
and how the two attackers working together and supporting each other could beat the defending
player in their group. This is a benefit which helped them to think about tactics and methods they
could use to achieve this, which I wanted to encourage. This helped to make us all feel good
especially when it worked, and the group members would feel they had achieved what they wanted
and that they could manage to think of how and carry out their plans with my encouragement. Ithink
this gave them a feeling of achievement and more confidence with their new skill and their abilities.
