With the help of at least five reliable sources (cited using the APA referencing system), write an
argumentative essay on the following topic: “DO THE BENEFITS OF MEDICAL TOURISM OUTWEIGH
THE DRAWBACKS FOR THE LOCAL POPULATION?”
Please follow the guidelines stipulated in the English 6 course guide to be found on LMS. The following
essentials should be evident in your argumentative essay:
1. STRUCTURE (20%): introduction – body – conclusion
• Paragraphing: topic sentence - supporting sentences - concluding sentences (PEEC);
• Essay is cohesive and coherent (use of linking words/devices);
• Word count should be within the range indicated: (1,000 – 1,400) excluding the bibliography /
sources.
2. CONTENTS (50%):
• Appropriate response to the task;
• Facts and research (in-text citation) used appropriately; at least 5 reliable sources;
• Strong thesis statement (end of introductory paragraph);
• Valid arguments presented;
• Effective refutation or opposing views;
• Repetition and redundancy avoided.
3. LANGUAGE USE (30%)
• Academic English: Correct sentence construction; Correct use of advanced grammar;
• At least 5 academic sources; (APA referencing style)
• Formal and specific vocabulary used appropriately;
• Correct grammar mechanics (spelling, punctuation, capitalisation etc.).
Do the benefits of medical tourism outweigh the drawbacks for the local population?
Medical tourism dates back thousands of years to ancient Greek times where patients came to seek
aid of healing gods (Al-Lamki, 2011). Today, this type of tourism is on the rise worldwide. The
phenomenon is a growing global industry and is especially popular in countries such as Thailand,
Turkey, India, Malaysia, Cuba, Mexico and Brazil (Lunt et al, 2011; Stainton, 2022). Medical tourism
can be defined as the practice of traveling to another country with the main purpose of receiving
medical care (Meštrović, 2018; Gaines & Lee, 2019). This niche form of tourism can include a wide
range of medical services, such as cosmetic surgery, dental work, fertility treatment, orthopedic
procedures, cardiology, rehabilitation and hair transplantation (Stainton, 2022). The reasons
individuals engage in medical tourism differ from lower prices, quality of care, advanced
technologies, shorter wait times, accessibility or availability of a treatment and specialized medical
