You are working as a final year apprentice in the machine
shop of a medium sized engineering company. Your
supervisor is pleased with your work and your ability to
operate machinery to carry out secondary machining
processes.
Your supervisor would like you to investigate the technology
Vocational Scenario or
of secondary machining processes that could be used to
Context
manufacture the component shown on the attached drawing.
You are then required to evaluate the features and attributes
of both traditional and specialist secondary machining
processes, to support the sustainable manufacture of such
components.

Research and produce a video with commentary that:
investigates three different traditional secondary
machining processes and three different specialist
secondary machining processes that could be used for
manufacture of the component. Your video must include the
following information for each process:
Task 1
• how the process works
• types of features that are possible
• batch sizes that can be manufactured
• accuracy of components eg. tolerances/surface finish

, Produce a written report that:
Evaluates the contrasting secondary machining processes
shown in your video and consider:
• why some processes would be chosen over others for
manufacture of the component
• the sustainability (energy consumption, disposal of
fluids and waste material) issues for all six secondary
machining processes
The evidence supplied should be easy to read and
understand by a third party who may or may not be an
engineer.

Checklist of evidence A video with commentary, investigating three different
required traditional and specialist secondary machining processes,
detailing batch sizes, features and accuracy (tolerances) of
components.

A written report evaluating three traditional processes and
three specialist processes, detailing sustainability issues
related to manufacturing.

Criteria covered by this task:
Unit/Criteria
To achieve the criteria, you must show that you are able to:
reference
41/A.D1 Evaluate, using language that is technically correct and of a high
standard, the use of contrasting traditional and specialist secondary
machining processes to sustainably manufacture components in
different batch sizes.
41/A.M1 Analyse how different traditional and specialist secondary machining
processes are used to sustainably manufacture different features on
components to the intended accuracy.
41/A.P1 Explain how different traditional and specialist secondary machining
processes are used to manufacture different features on components.
