Reviewing CNC processes and lessons learnt
title
Assessor Z. Rushiti
Issue date W/C 16.01.2023
Hand in W/C 30.01.2023
deadline
You are working as a trainee CNC operator for a company that
manufactures complex components that would be difficult to
manufacture using traditional methods.
Vocational
Your supervisor would now like you to produce a reflective report,
Scenario or
based on what happened when you programmed, set-up, simulated,
Context
carried out and quality checked the CNC machining of a component,
in which you identify what went well, what could have gone better
and what you can take forward to the next stage of your development
as an engineer.
You are going to review and reflect on the practical activities you
carried out for Assignment 2. You now need to produce a report that
includes the ‘lessons learnt’ during the activities.
Task 1
To do this:
, You will need to collate your evidence from Assignment 2. You should
then review and reflect on the activities that you completed and the
behaviours that you showed when you programmed, set-up,
simulated, carried out and quality checked the CNC machining of a
component.
Your report should:
• Review and reflect on the full range of activities that you
completed. You should include information about the actions
you took to ensure health and safety in the workplace, and
how you effectively developed and applied general engineering
and programming and machining skills to a professional
standard. You need to consider the effectiveness and efficiency
of your programming, the setting-up and operation of
machinery and issues relating to sustainability. Ensure you
demonstrate a good technical understanding and analysis of
CNC programming and machining processes.
• Review the engineering behaviours you used, and how
successfully/consistently/professionally they were applied,
including taking initiative and responsibility, communication
and literacy skills, and your ability to solve problems.
• Suggest and recommend improvements that could be made
when carrying out similar activities in the future, especially
related to:
● The set-up documentation, programming and the use of
the machining processes and equipment to manufacture
the component more efficiently and accurately while
considering sustainability
● The application of the relevant behaviours.
Your report should include correct technical language and clearly
differentiate between fact and opinion.
Checklist of A report attached to the portfolio from Assignment 2 that reviews the
evidence processes used, reflects on own performance and provides a
required conclusion focusing on the improvements that could be made.
Criteria covered by this task:
Unit/Criteria
To achieve the criteria you must show that you are able to:
reference
43/D.D3 Demonstrate consistently good technical understanding and analysis of
CNC programming and machining processes, including the application of
relevant behaviours and general engineering skills to a professional
standard
43/D.M5 Recommend improvements to the set up and use of CNC programming
and machining processes and to the relevant behaviours applied
,43/D.P6 Explain how health and safety, CNC programming, machining and
general engineering skills were applied effectively during the
manufacturing process
Explain how relevant behaviours were applied effectively during the
43/D.P7 manufacturing process

Assignment
Brief
During the planning phase for the Adapter plate, we decide to use the Bridgeport 500 CNC
milling machine, because of the sophisticated features can create and the types of tools it
has a very crucial bit that we done it learn about the health and safety rules and regulations.
CNC Milling Machine health and Safety: When we done the research about
the tools used to manufacture the adapter plate, we had to go into the
workshop to check the tools available and their sizes. Before we got into the
workshop, we had to make sure we had safety goggles on to keep our eyes
protected and we had to follow the workshop rules that we must only walk on
the designated walkway which was between the yellow lines at all times. There
are many PPE (mandatory) signs in the workshop to make sure that you have
the right PPE on. Also, we must follow the Regulations Set out by the
government to make our working environment safe these regulations can
include COSHH regulation, PPE regulation and Manual handling regulation these are all very
important and we must follow them and remind people about them by having White boards
with the information’s on so the employees will remember what they can and can’t do.
1. PPE Regulation at work 2002: This Regulation requires the employer to provide
suitable PPE to all employees where is required and a safe place to store it, this
regulation also requires the employee to follow the rules set out by the employer
and wear the PPE at all times when required.
2. Manual Handling Operations Regulation 1992: This Regulation requires the employer
to give proper training to employees about lifting materials manually and how
should they do it and what method to use (e.g., use a trolley for objects heavier than
20 kg) This regulation also states that the employer must try to reduce manual
handling operations and the likelihood of them occurring.
3. Control of Substances Hazardous to Health regulation 2002: This regulation works in
close relation with the PPE regulation as the employer must give proper PPE and the
employees must use them where is required to. It also states in the regulation that
the employer must provide professional training to the employees about hazardous
chemicals and how to store them and what to do during and emergency. In the
regulation it also states that proper ventilation should be present where those
chemicals are used e.g., coolant used during manufacturing, ventilation should be
turned on to prevent employees from breathing in coolant particles and becoming
sick. The regulation also requires the employer to send the employees on Health
checks every 6 months or so.
