1.1 How is the concept 'class' explained by the following theorists?
a) A conflict theorist

Conflict Theorist: A conflict theorist, such as Karl Marx, would explain the concept of "class"
as a social construct that emerges from the inherent conflict and power dynamics between
different social groups in society. According to this perspective, class is primarily determined
by the ownership and control of the means of production. Marx argued that society is
divided into two main classes: the bourgeoisie (the capitalist class who own and control the
means of production) and the proletariat (the working class who do not own the means of
production and must sell their labour). Class conflict arises due to the unequal distribution
of resources and the exploitation of the working class by the capitalist class.

b) A functionalist theorist

A functionalist theorist, such as Emile Durkheim, would explain the concept of "class" as a
necessary and functional component of society. From a functionalist perspective, class is
seen as a way to ensure the division of labour and the smooth functioning of society. Class
serves to allocate individuals to different social positions based on their abilities, talents,
and qualifications. Each class has its own roles and functions, contributing to the overall
stability and functioning of society. Functionalists believe that social inequality, including
class inequality, is necessary for motivating individuals to strive for success and achieve
social progress.
