,A) Perspectives on teaching and learning
Your mentor’s perspective on teaching and learning will influence how he/she
manages the class, but also how he/she guides you and interprets your observation
of activities in the class.

Do you know who your mentor is? His/her experience will influence his/her teaching
philosophy and it will influence the guidance the mentor gives you while observing.

Make an appointment with your mentor and complete the following information after
speaking to him/her.

Training as mentor (by whom and how much formal/informal, accredited or not)

- The relationship between I and my mentor was formal. She provided me both
short-term and long-term development and reinforcement of learning.
- Allowed participation only from individuals that are truly interested and qualified.
- Provides training to ensure participants understand their roles.
- Promotes self-driven learning and provide feedback after the lesson.

What are your expectations of the mentor?

- Welcome me to her class and introduce me to the learners and other educators.
- Discuss long-term and short-term student learning goals for the student
teacher’s experience.
- Support me in developing skills in planning instruction, and classroom
management.
- Encourage the student teacher to reflect on each lesson to gain further insights
from her successes and challenges.
- Allow the student teacher to participate in the life of the class and the school.
- Ensures that I cultivate positive attitudes towards teaching and education at
school.
- Serves the role model for the student teacher.

What can the mentor expect from you?

- Establish good working relations with the mentor and the rest of the staff
members at the school.
- Become involved in all curriculum and school activities and learn as much as
possible to gain experience.
- Develop a critical and reflective attitude towards the school, teaching, and
education.

, - Report daily for a full school day and be punctual.
- Keep a notebook of all lesson plans/activities.
- Prepare written daily lesson plans which are to be approved by the mentor
teacher.

Reflection: How did the mentor(s) contribute to your practical teaching experience?

- The mentor contributed so much through my experience as she recognized for
their practical knowledge of the teaching profession, which complements the
theoretical knowledge that the student teacher has acquired from the university.
- The mentor encouraged the development and growth of the student teacher, to
ensure the student teacher maintains a steady improvement of student learning
in the classroom.

3.2.1.1 The student’s perspective

Description of your personal background:

Your own background and teaching philosophy will influence the observation of
classroom management aspects and your interpretation thereof. Complete the
following information to gain insight and awareness of the aspects that contribute to
your teaching philosophy.

Are you currently employed? NO

Are you teaching at present? NO

If so, for how long and which grade? …………………………………….

Or is this your first teaching experience? This is my first teaching experience.

Description of your qualifications (where and when did you acquire them).

-

How do you manage your studies? (Employed full-time or not)

-

, Description of any other appropriate experience/information, which has had an
influence on your teaching practice experience period (observation).

- During my observation time in Muzomuhle Primary School, I have noticed that
the learners have a wide variety of abilities, attention, interesting, and love for
learning.
- During lessons students are engaged because of the teacher’s ability to
implement interests of the students into things and giving them options.
- If an error occurs during a lesson, the teacher normally, allows for the learner
who got something wrong to try again, or to call on a friend to help them out.
- I have learned the importance of having an open mind. I have learned how to
identify teaching philosophy and teaching styles.
- I enjoyed my teaching practice observation experience despite all of its
hardships and challenges.
- The best experience was being active in class and getting positive feedback
from all the teachers had motivated me a lot.

Description of your experience with Unisa's teaching practice processes,
arrangements, placements, school visits, support, etc.

- Unisa’s teaching practise process was not difficult as I followed every step that
were written on the Tutorial letter.
- The only bad experience I experienced was placements. I sent the DSAR25
form, and I still have not received any email about the confirmation code. Even
the principal has not received it.
- I think Unisa has not supported me enough with placements.

What has been your experience of the teaching practice observations? (Both
positive and negative experiences.)

- The negative experience was being exposed to bad discipline in the classroom
and the disruption of lessons due to unplanned activities.
- Another negative aspect was that learners do not know to leave a space for
other words they just write words as one word.
- The classrooms were full, some learners would sit down or on their knees until
after school, there was not enough furniture to accommodate all learners.
- The positive aspects during my first observation were being welcomed very well
by mentor and other staff members.
- From observing at Muzomuhle primary school to learning more best ways for
me to teach and set up my classroom.
