Class preparation form group lesson

Target group: Knee osteoarthritis patients (Overweight and age 45+) privacy
Personal goal for this project:
During this module I have been working on my didactic skills and I will be implementing these to formulate a group training to a group of patients with knee
osteoarthritis.
General objective(s) exercise programme:
The general objective for this exercise program may be categorised into three categories: achieving a healthy lifestyle, improving physical fitness, and
understanding/reasoning of regular exercise for knee arthritis.
Specific lesson objectives:
The main goal of treating knee arthritis is to reduce joint pain and swelling and to maintain and/or improve joint function. Sadly, we cannot reverse arthritis
but with the right kind of treatment it can ease the pain and help maintain and improve function, while still being able to carry out daily activities. Thus, the
long-term goal of treatment is to slow down the progress of the disease and help with managing the condition.
SMART GOALS
The goal for my patients is to improve overall strength in their legs, this will be measured by determining their SQUAD 3 Rep Max. And for this
reason, the goal is to increase the load of a SQUAD 3 Rep Max by 25% over a period of three months from the first exercise group training.
The goal for my patients is to reduce the visual analogue scale (scale 1-10) by 2 when walking up/down the stairs (50 stairs climb) over a period of 2
months from the first exercise group training
(Note: Instruct the patient to point to the position on the line between the faces to indicate how much pain they are currently feeling. The far-left end
indicates ‘No pain’ and the far right end indicates ‘Worst pain ever’.)
, Motivation for selected format and content:
Commonly we see that people with knee complains, such as arthritis, are overweight. This will add extra load on the knee joint. Knee arthritis can be a real
struggle for people and can make it hard to do many everyday activities such as walking, climbing the stairs, and getting up from a seated position. For
those people it might be very difficult to exercise since the pain is so severe and hence, they will become less active to avoid the pain. Generally physical
therapy can be very effective in terms of modulating or reducing the pain. With adequate exercise it will strengthen the muscle in the right way allowing the
forces that would normally be put on the knee to unload and therefore give the knee a change to rest and recover itself. This is where my main motivation
comes from, the ability to be able to help those who suffer from knee osteoarthritis by giving them the right and adequate exercise they need in order to
reduce their symptoms and be able to continue doing everyday tasks.
Focus points for ensuring safety:
The participant’s safety is an important aspect of my lesson preparation. This applies to the way I use exercise materials (provide clear explanations, warn of
potentially dangerous circumstances) and the way I construct my space, making sure there is sufficient distance between the participants. Another
component of training safety is to avoid injuries caused by inappropriate exercise execution, executing an exercise in a hurry and/or continuing it for too
long. Throughout the introduction, I will question about any potential limiting factors. During the group training it is my responsibility as a
physiotherapist/health care provider to transfer the goal, guiding the group during the process and give feedback when needed.
I. Transfer of content:
I will need to make sure I am able to transfer my knowledge and give a clear general and specific goal of the exercise program.
II. Guiding the group process
Like I mentioned before, it can be a real struggle for people with knee complains to exercise but it is my responsibility to give them the guidance they
require.
III. Giving feedback
When it is necessary, I will be there to give the right feedback (e.g. correction of inappropriate form).
Possible mistakes per exercise Instruction and correction
Seated Leg extension Sit in a chair with good posture. Straighten one of your legs as far as possible. Hold for 10 seconds and then
- slowly lower your leg. Repeat this 3 times. If this is too easy for you, while you straighten one leg raise the
other one. Another alternative is to add an ankle weight. This is a good exercise you could do every time you
