FASCIA
FASCIA:
- Fascia is a strong connective tissue that strengthens and divides the muscles into functional
groups.
- Segregates leg into three compartments - anterior, medial, and posterior.
- Fascia latae surrounds all of the thigh muscles and partitions them into compartments with their
own blood and nerve supplies.
- Iliotibial tract is a thickened lateral portion of the fascia latae from the iliac crest to the knee
connecting to the tensor fascia latae muscle.
- The deep fascia forms intermuscular septa that attach to the linea aspera of the femur to create the
compartments of the thigh.
MUSCLE COMPARTMENTS:

ILLIOTIBIAL BAND:
- Band of Maissiat - fibrous structure connecting ilium and tibia.
- Unique to man
- Origin - iliac crest / iliac tubercle
- Vertical component of the fascia lata of the thigh
- Intimately associated with the TFL and GM muscle deeper fibers.
- Connected to:
• intermuscular septum and linea aspera on the femur
• lateral border of the patella anteriorly (iliopatellar band)
• the lateral tibial tubercle (Gerdy's tubercle)
• the anterior fibres of the biceps tendon posteriorly
- Combined pull of the gluteus maximus muscle, the tensor fascia lata muscle, and the
tension in the iliotibial band is posterior to the axis of rotation of the hip joint during standing
- Maintain the hip and knee in full extension - "Ligament of Idleness”

BONES
FEMUR:
- Largest and strongest bone in the body
- Length ~ ¼ of person's height
- Articulates proximally with acetabulum of hip and distally with tibia and
patella
- On the back of the femur is the linea aspera where the intermuscular
septae insert and that divides near the bottom into the medial and
lateral supracondylar lines
- The intercondylar fossa between the two condyles that end in the
medial and lateral condyle (two articular surfaces that articulate with
the tibia in their respective surfaces)
PATELLA:
- Sesamoid bone (a bone that sits inside a tendon) in quadriceps tendon
that articulates with a groove on the front of the femur known as the
trochlear
- Acts as pulley for the forces of anterior thigh muscles acting on the tibia
- Articulates with the medial and lateral condyles
