Preparation
Mrs. K. is 32 years old woman who works as a nurse at the Amsterdam
Medical Center (AMC). She just started a new study to become an acute care nurse.
The interview is done at her parents’ home where she lives with her sister.
Mrs. K. is experiencing some stress regarding her new study which she
started. She failed a presentation that she had to give about a case study. Mrs. K is
scared not to pass her exam.
Four possible themes that could be addressed during the interview are when
Mrs. K experiences the issues most, whether she expected the issues, how Mrs. K.
feels about the issues, and how Mrs. K. copes with the stress.
My first learning goal for this interview is related to giving a summary at an
appropriate time during the interview. I realized that I was too focussed on wanting to
stick to the interview plan that I had crafted beforehand. The effect was that I
interrupt the interviewee too often and that resulted in an interview that had not a
good flow.I want not only to give my interview a good structure but I want it to have a
good flow and give the interviewee more space when he/she is talking. For this
interview, I aim to give the interview a good structure and flow by first stating in
chronological order what the interviewee could expect from the interview. I will
summarize what the interviewee had said before starting to ask follow-up questions.
In doing so I hope to give structure to the interview and make sure the interview has
a nice flow and give space to the interviewee to express herself. To see whether I
have achieved my goal, I will discuss with the interviewee whether the interview had
a good structure and flow.
My second learning goal for this interview is related to reflecting on emotions. I
did not use this skill as much as I had to during the practice interviews. Because I
expect this interview to have moments where I can practice this skill, I want to work
on it by setting it as my second goal. In the past I found it difficult to find the right
moment to reflect on emotions and, therefore, often did not use this skill at all. This
happened because I did not what to say precisely to reflect emotion. For this
interview, I want to use this skill regularly. To achieve this, I will write down this goal
on a paper as a reminder to use this skill.I will also try to be alert so that I notice
when Mrs. K. shows her emotions. I will have achieved this goal if I reflected Mrs K.
emotions at least twice.
