When people hear about freedom of speech we most likely link it to human rights.
Obviously everyone is free to say what they want, I believe that it is a need for
everyone to stand up for themselves if they have to, but are we using it in the wrong
way to offend others? Are we taking it a step too far? That is why there should be a
clear limit on hate speech disguised as freedom of speech.
In October 2015 there was a women who verbally abused a pregnant moslim women
on the bus. The pregant muslim women did nothing to offend the other women but
because she was muslim the other found it nessercely to use some hatefull words
against her. Of course she can say whatever she wants about her opinion of this
religion. But to verbally abuse this moslim women is not acceptable This is a good
example of hate speech in public that connects to racism. This happens a lot, I think
that everyone has seen some situation like this in their lives. It is just not acceptable
and racism is definitely a form of hate speech that goes way too far.
In the social media world freedom of speech and expression are indispensable
nowadays. But a lot of times these expressions are used the wrong way, in the form
of hate speech or bullying. People are verbally abusing other people by for example
telling them to comid suicide or by giving them death threats. The bullies are using
the term freedom of speech as an excuse for making someone's life miserable.
Social media is an easy platform to perform verbal abuse because you can easily
make a fake account and be anonymous. When you are anonymous, there is no
punishment. There should be a solution for this, like not allowing people to make
more than two accounts on one device or revealing extreme hater’s identity to the
police so they can get the punishment they deserve.
There is always lots of fake news or things that are exaggerated by the press. This
causes a wrong point of view on current news or situations. The press sometimes
reveals secrets of people, this is private and it is not up to the press to put the
secrets all over the internet or in the paper and is certainly not considered freedom of
speech. These secrets can ruin someone's life or career. Leaking someone's
personal information is punishable, but it should be more enforced. For example, the
sex tape of Kim Kardashian in 2007. She did not put her tape on the internet herself
but someone else did, she was scared for her career. Eventually it worked out, but it
could have had a different ending.
All in all there should be limits on freedom of speech. It causes lots of hate speech.
For instance because of racism. Social media can be really brutal because people
are behind a screen and can create a fake account and say everything they want on
the internet. Lastly, the press can post anything about famous people and give a
twist on the real story. So we have to take a step back and create limitations,
otherwise it will get out of control!
