Farm Chapter Summaries
Chapter 1 - ANSOld Major calls all of the animals to the barn to tell them about his dream and
teaches them "Beasts of England".
Chapter 2 - ANSThe Rebellion is successfully carried through, all animals agree that no animal
should ever live in the farm-house and the seven commandments are written. The animals
notice that the milk has disappeared.
Chapter 3 - ANSThe animals bring in the harvest and create the flag for the "Republic of the
Animals". The debates and attempts to teach the animals how to read and write begin. Four
legs good, two legs bad is introduced. The puppies are taken away by Napoleon and the pigs
convince the animals that only they should have the apples.
Chapter 4 - ANSPigeons are sent out to spread the message of the Rebellion to other farms. Mr
Jones complains to Mr Pilkington and Mr Frederick in the Pub. They attempt to recapture the
farm. Snowball calls a retreat which leads to an unnamed sheep dying and Boxer thinking he's
killed a stable-boy. "Animal Hero, First Class" bestowed upon Snowball and Boxer. "Animal
Hero, Second Class" bestowed upon the dead sheep.
Chapter 5 - ANSClover confronts Mollie about letting one of Mr Pilkington's men stroke her nose
and talking to her. Mollie denies and runs away which allows Clover to find the ribbons and
sugar lumps in her stall. Mollie disappears and is seen in a dogcart, the animals never speak of
her again. The sheep begin using "Four legs good, two legs bad" to drain people out. *Snowball
proposes the windmill.* Napoleon urinates on the plans. When the building of the windmill is put
to vote the reconditioned puppies appear and run Snowball off of the farm. Squealer is sent to
tell the animals that Snowball was a criminal. Old Major's skull is dug up and displayed beside
the gun. Napoleon announces that the windmill shall be built, despite him disagreeing with it
initially.
Chapter 6 - ANSThe work on the windmill begins. Boxer begins getting up earlier in order to do
more work. Napoleon begins getting the hens to give up their eggs so that he can sell them.
Squealer convinces the animals that a resolution against engaging in trade had never been
passed or even mentioned. The pigs move into the farmhouse and begin sleeping in beds.
Clover gets Muriel to read her the fourth commandment which has been changed to read "No
animal shall sleep in a bed *with sheets*." The hens all dream of a gun going off at the same
time, the whole farm wakes up and finds the windmill in ruins. Napoleon blames Snowball for its
destruction and essentially puts a bounty on him, he then announces that they shall rebuild the
windmill.
