, Educational gaps in Romania due to Covid-19


This essay will discuss three different gaps in the educational system in Romania
due to Covid-19. Firstly, the effect the pandemic had on rural areas will be
discussed. Secondly, I will discuss the difficulties teachers faced when the pandemic
started. Finally, the change in home-schooling will be discussed.


Both students and teachers were impacted by the pandemic in different ways, each
of which had a different outcome. Education significantly changed the methods used
for teaching, learning, and evaluation. There are differences amongst students, with
rural students suffering more than other groups in terms of maintaining contact with
the school and having access to online learning resources. This is because there
aren't enough resources and infrastructure in place to provide access to the internet.
(Ciaco, Bratu, 2021).


Romanian stakeholders understood the need for instructors and students to have
high levels of digital literacy. Since 2005, a number of initiatives have been started
with the goal of making the online educator a practical illustration of a person with
digital skills. However, due to a lack of digital literacy during COVID-19, the
educational system was unprepared. (Stroe, 2022). Teachers were given hundreds
of alternatives to choose from and conventional curriculum to adapt to an online
approach, despite the fact that the majority of them were welcoming the changes
brought about by the technologicalisation of society. (Hosszu, Rughinis, 2020). The
lack of experience with online teaching and learning, a sense of knowledge
deficiency, and the perception of cognitive gaps all contribute to scepticism.


Home education is not permitted in Romania as a substitute for public education.
Most people were not aware of it before COVID-19, and sociological and educational
research mostly ignored it. Home-schooling has been expanding up to this point. As
parents' scepticism about the public school system's ability to effectively prepare
students for the present educational system rises, the problem is becoming more
widespread. In the eyes of parents, home-schooling is the solution to the pandemic-
era educational disaster. (Anghel, 2020).
