The boy in the striped pyjamas
Chapter one
Bruno makes a discovery

Maria, the family maid was packing Bruno’s belongings. Mother explained why. Bruno thinks about
if he had done anything wrong, but he couldn’t think about anything though.
Lars, the butler was in Mothers room packing her belongings. Bruno and Mother went to the large
dining room (where the Fury and his beautiful blonde wife had been to dinner the week before).
Then she tells him that Father, I, Gretel and you are send away. He wasn’t particularly bothered if
Gretel was being send away, because she was a Hopeless Case and caused nothing but trouble for
him.
Because Father is a very important man they need to move. Karl, Daniel and Martin know exactly
what job their fathers do. Cook makes the food.
Bruno is arguing with Mother that the doesn’t want to say goodbye to Karl, Daniel and Martin.
Because they had ‘plans’. Bruno loves to slide down the banister from the very top floor to the
ground floor.

Chapter two
The new house

Everything about the new house seemed to be the exact opposite of their old home and he couldn’t
believe that they were really going to live there.
Bruno tells Mother that he thinks it was a bad idea to move, and argues about it. Mother tells him
that this is their home for the forseeable future. Bruno needs to go upstairs and help Maria with
unpacking. Bruno tells Maria that he is tired to hear about Father’s job. Then he hears something
outside his bedroom and he thinks Father heard him, but it was a soldier carrying a box, he looked
at Bruno and gave him a quick nod and walked away. Bruno and Maria talk about the soldier and
then Bruno sees a window in his room walks slowly to it and looked outside. Opened his eyes and
an O mouth because something made him feel very cold and unsafe.

Chapter three
The hopeless case

Gretel is three years older than Bruno. The friends of his sister weren’t nice to him. The ‘monster’
always said that Bruno wasn’t nine but he was only six. Because Bruno is small.
Gretel says the name of the house is Out-With, but Bruno considered this, he hadn’t seen any sign
on the outside to say what is was called. Gretel thinks Out-With means Out-With the people who
lived there before them.
Bruno says that he misses Karl, Daniel and Martin. And Gretel says I miss Hilda, Isobel and Louise.
I don’t think the other children look at all friendly. What did you just say? Asked Gretel. The other
children?
Bruno ignores her and walks to his room indicating Gretel should follow him. Gretel looks out of
the window and saw exactly what Bruno had been talking about.

Chapter four
What they saw through the window

, There were small boys and big boys, fathers and grandfathers perhaps a few uncles too. What sort
of place is this? asks Gretel. And where are all the girls, grandmothers and mothers? Perhaps they
live in a different part said Bruno.
From Gretel’s room you could see a forest, a little dark but a good place for picknicks. But from
Bruno’s window the view was very different. First there was a quite large garden. Past the flowers
there was a very pleasant pavement with a wooden bench facing the house. Usually it would be a
strange thing to do but she could understand why. About twenty feet further everything changed
there was a big fence with barbed wire. And the ground was made from a sand-like substance.

I don’t understand who would build such a nasty-looking place. This must be the countryside. Said
Gretel. I don’t think so. You’re nine. How would you now? But then where are all the animals
you’re talking about? Bruno said.
Perhaps it’s not a farm then. Which also means that this probably isn’t our holiday home after all.
Who are all those people? And what are they doing there? Said Gretel.
Bruno stood up and for the first time they stood there together, shoulder to shoulder, and stared at
what was happening not fifty feet away from their new home.
Gretel says that it must be some sort of rehearsal. I told you there were children here. Not the type I
want to play with. They look filthy. I’m going back to my room to arrange my doll. The view is
decidedly nicer from there.
Bruno had one final thought: everybody was wearing the same clothes: a pair of grey striped
pyjamas with a grey striped cap on their heads. How extraordinary he muttered, before turning
away.

Chapter five
Out of bounds at all times and no exceptions

Father had left a few days earlier, on the night of the day that Bruno found Maria going through his
things. In the fays following, Mother, Gretel, Maria, Cook, Lars and Bruno had spent all their time
boxing up their belongings and loading them into a big truck.
Mother said: We should never have let the Fury come to dinner. Tears in her eyes, jumped when she
saw Maria. I thought you where in the car.
When they arrived at the train station the family boarded a very comfortable train with very few
people on it. The other train were crowds of people.
Bruno hadn’t seen his Father. Down below he saw a group of five men outside Father’s office,
laughing and shaking hands. Father’s office was out of bound at all times and no exceptions. Bruno
knocked on the door.
I don’t like it here. A home is where one’s family is said Father. I remember when I was a child,
there were certain things I didn’t want to do, but when my Father said ….. I got on with Them.
So you know how I feel? Yes but I also knew my Father knew what was the best for me.
Have you done something wrong. Why would the Fury send you from a nice house to this place?
I know this move is difficult for you. But you’ll simply have to accept them.
I don’t want to accept it! Go to your room. Who are all those people outside? They’re not people at
all.
Bruno needs to stand straight, arm in the air and say Heil Hitler. (He thinks it is a other way to say
goodbye, have a good day)

Chapter six
The overpaid maid

Bruno was laying on his bed staring at the cracked paint ceiling. Hello.
