, 1 INTRODUCTION


I will examine four theme topics and important ideas and approaches in the fields of
communication and media studies in this assignment. Textual Analysis: Narrative
and Argument, Media and Visual Literacy, Communication and Media Semiotics, and
Field Research in Media Studies are some of these themes. I will discuss particular
subjects and issues within each category to show that I comprehend and use
theoretical frameworks and analytical methods. First, I will define signs, go over their
qualities, and talk about how they work in media communication in Communication
and Media Semiotics. In addition, I'll discuss Jakobson's concept of sign functions
and use instances from ads to highlight it.

Media and Visual Literacy, I will go into great detail about the three levels that Du
Plooy (2017) has identified. After that, I'll use these levels to examine a political
cartoon with broad or national significance. I will critically examine Propp's
contributions to the discipline of narrative analysis in Textual Analysis: Narrative and
Argument, concentrating on his six sequential stages and seven character functions.
In addition, I will use Propp's approach to analyse a television or magazine
commercial and explain how particular functions are shown.

Finally, I will discuss the idea of netnography and its significance for comprehending
online interactions and behaviours in Field Research in Media Studies. I will outline
the procedures for conducting participant observation in order to examine Twitter
users' reactions to news stories, using the scenario of biassed views of media bias in
political news coverage that is presented. I will use certain media texts as examples
of theoretical ideas and analytical methods throughout the assignment. These
include a political cartoon for the part on media and visual literacy and commercials
for the discussion of communication and media semiotics and textual analysis. I
hope to show that I have a thorough understanding of communication and media
studies, and that I can apply theoretical frameworks to real-world media texts and
