Teen activism has surged in recent years, with young people around the globe taking to the
streets, social media, and community organizations to advocate for various causes. From
climate change to social justice, teens are increasingly vocal about the issues that matter to
them. This essay explores the significance of teen activism, examining its benefits and
disadvantages to determine whether it is ultimately a force for good.
One reason teen activism is good is because it encourages empowerment and engagement.
One of the primary benefits of teen activism is its ability to empower young people and engage
them in civic life. Through activism, teens develop critical thinking skills, learn about social
issues, and become active participants in democracy. By advocating for causes they believe in,
teenagers gain a sense of agency and purpose, which can have a positive impact on their self-
esteem and well-being. An example is the case of Alex Lin, Alex Lin and his group turned
300,000 pounds of E-waste computers into computers that can be reused. He also donated
them to other parts of the world, but mainly focused on Malaysia and Sri Lanka. This example
proves that teens can develop critical thinking skills, commit to their hobby and change the
world!
Another reason teen activism is good is because it drives social change. Their passion and
energy often attract widespread attention, forcing society to confront pressing issues and
prompting action from policymakers and institutions. An example of this is Sophie Scholl. Scholl
has been extensively commemorated for her anti-Nazi resistance work. The White Rose was
founded in 1942 by several students at the University of Munich, including Sophie Scholl and
her brother Hans. The members were united against Nazi policies and began writing and
distributing leaflets calling on the German people to take action to stop injustice and genocide.
Another example is Malala Yousafzai. In 2013, Malala and her father co-founded the Malala
Fund to bring awareness to the social and economic impact of girls' education and to empower
girls to demand change. By doing this she changed policies within the country, girls were now
able to receive an education. Which is why in December 2014, she became the youngest-ever
Nobel Peace Prize laureate.
Teen activism is also good because it creates future leaders. By participating in protests,
organizing events, and collaborating with like-minded individuals, teens develop leadership
skills, resilience, and a sense of responsibility towards their communities. Many young activists
go on to pursue careers in politics, advocacy, or social entrepreneurship, using their
experiences to effect long-term change. An example of this is Greta Thunberg, As an
environmental activist Greta Thunberg gained global recognition for her unbiased and vocal
presence against climate change. She started protesting outside the Swedish Parliament every
Friday at the age of 15, urging leaders to tackle climate change. Her solo demonstration sparked
