“What/who are the stakeholders that play an important role in the development of tourism in Canggu?”
5.1 Tourism businesses in Canggu
The different types of tourism businesses situated in Canggu can be distinguished into five categories,
namely: accommodation, community and development organizations, food and beverage, retail, and
tourism attractions. At the moment these businesses mainly consist of MSEs (Micro and Small
Enterprises) owned by locals. However, several big international chains and other international
businesses and investors are becoming more and more involved in the tourism sector over the past
years as that sector is growing. According to Graemae MacRae, lecturer Environment and Planning at
Massey University, it was estimated that in 2016 for the whole island of Bali 80% of the tourism
businesses were owned by non-Balinese (Wright, 2016).
For accommodation, hotels, hostels, AirBNBs, and mostly guesthouses, (private) villas and
homestays fall under this category. Canggu is furthermore known as an area full of co-working spaces
where visitors are allowed to buy a drink and spend their whole day working at the cafe and it is a
space where events are organized. These cafes help create a stronger community feeling as it is a
popular place for meeting new people. There are around twenty of the so-called ‘banjars’ in the area
that also contribute to creating a strong community in Canggu.
All shops in Canggu fall under the retail category. These shops are surf and sports equipment shops,
furniture shops, boutiques, the (mini)markets and the health-related stores (e.g., drugstores). As
mentioned already, Canggu has a wide scale arrangement of restaurants, bars, clubs and cafes that
are part of the food and beverage category. Lastly, the other tourism suppliers are the local
attractions, such as temples, tattoo shops, workout and yoga studios, spas and wellness centers,
businesses providing workshops, surf schools and the transportation rentals (Kludzeweit et al., 2020,
23-40), (Taylor, 2021).
