Differentiate between Pepkor’s value chain and supply chain by completing Table 1 in your
assessment template document. To complete Table 1, discuss the following:
1.1 Using an example from the Pepkor case study, illustrate the difference between Pepkor’s
supply chain and its value chain. [2]
According to Badenhorst-Weiss, Cilliers, Dlamini and Ambe (2016) the main difference between
a value chain and a supply chain is that the supply chain deals with building the product and
getting it to the consumer, while the value chain looks for ways to enhance the product's value
as it moves along that supply chain. While supply chain is a set of three or more organizations
linked directly by one or more of the upstream or downstream flows of products, services,
finances, and information from a source to a customer; value chain is composed of primary and
support activities that can lead to competitive advantage when configured properly,
For example, in the case of Pepkor, supply chain relates to sourcing and purchasing of
inventories at favourable prices from the suppliers which are strategically selected and engaged
to maintain a long-term relationship that is vital for the success of Pepkopr, as well as
distributing the products to customers at low cost using Pepkor’s distribution network with
seamlessly integrating distribution centres, logistics hubs, and an expansive store
infrastructure. Pepkor offers South Africa the most affordable courier service.
Value chain on the other hand, in the case of Pepkor entails the company’s activities in adding
value to the products such that it serves its customers with superior products that confirms to
the sustainability standards. The case notes that Pepkor focuses on providing customers with
access to value-for-money products and services, all offered at the most competitive prices and
with maximum convenience. This commitment to delivering value is facilitated by implementing
world-class systems and processes designed to ensure both cost efficiency and product quality.
