being represented in Parliament (of Great Britain)n even though they were a colony. They
had to pay taxes (very highn especially afer the rench and Indian war)n but didn’t get
anything to say. Obviouslyn they weren’t very happy with this and it soon became a slogan
“No taxaton without representatonn!” The colonists wanted to have a say in government
if they had to pay these many taxes.

Boeton Tea Party: Afer the tea act (taxes on tea)n on December 16thn 1773n about ify men
dressed as Indians broke into a Britsh ship and dumped 342 chests of tea into the harbor.
The Brits were extremely angry about that. Their reacton was ‘The intolerable act’. The
Boston Harbor was closedn and the colony subjected to direct royal rule.
Revolutonary war: On April 18n 1775n 700 Britsh soldiers arrive at the colonies to seize
weapons of the rebels. But the colonists were warned that the soldiers were coming. In the
village of Lexingtonn the Britsh found 70 American militamenn farmers and tradesmenn
barring their way. These part – tme soldiers were known as Minutemen. This was because
they had promised to take up arms immediately – in a minute – whenever they were
needed. ohen the Minutemen refused to return homen somebody ired a shot (nobody
knows who). Eight Minutemen felt dead. The irst shots had been ired in what was to
become the American oar of Independence. The Britsh soldiers reached Concord a few
hours later and destroyed some of the weapons and gunpowder there. But by the tme they
set of to return to Boston hundreds more Minutemen had gathered. The soldiers were stll
under attack when they arrived back in Boston. A ring of armed Americans gathered around
the city. The next month. May 1775n a second Contnental Congress met in Philadelphia and
began to act as an American natonal government. It set up an army of 17n000 men under
the command of George oashington. oashington was a Virginia landowner and surveyor
with "experience of ightng’’ in the rench and Indian oar. The Contnental Congress also
sent representatves to seek aid from friendly European natons - especially from rancen
Britain's old enemy.
