What is Creative Ability?
Creative ability → level of function of being able to change behaviour in order to
create something in response to environmental, social, or occupational demands
o ability to present yourself freely, without anxiety, limitations, or inhibitions
o preparedness to function at maximum level of competence
o ability to function free from consciousness of self
Du Toit definition → ability to form a relational contact with people, events, and
materials, and via preparedness, to function freely and with originality at maximum
level of competence
What is creative capacity?
Creative capacity → Max creative potential individual can reach under optimal
circumstances
o Varied among individuals
o Influenced by intelligence, personality, environment, mental health & security
What is required for growth in Creative Ability?
Maximal effort → the exertion of creative effort at the boundary of creative ability in
order to achieve growth
1. What are the 3 interconnected prerequisite for maximal effort?
o Creative Response
positive attitude / response towards opportunity associated with
occupational engagement
reflects preparedness to use all available resources to participate in
occupation in anticipation of pleasure, gain or acknowledgement
despite anxieties about capabilities or success of outcome
precedes creative participation.

process of active participation in occupations and daily activities

Motivation is the energy source for occupational behaviour
Being-in-becoming

Intrinsic motivation → biological / innate urge to explore and
master the environment through occupation
Motivation has 6 sequential levels in the VdTMoCA based on
differing levels of occupational development
Action is the conversion of energy into occupational behaviour
Doing-in-becoming
Exertion of drive into mental & physical effort resulting in
occupational behaviour & creation tangible/intangible product
Action also has 10 sequential levels describing differences in
nature & quality of occupational engagement
Explain sequential development as a central concept of creative ability
o Activity participation develops along a continuum from existence and
egocentrism (level 1) to contribution to the community and society (level 6)

Entails preparation for constructive action
Development of functional body use → grasp, sensory
identification, co-ordination
Self-awareness within relationship to the environment
Tone → Purposeless, unplanned action
Pre-destructive / destructive action
Self-differentiation → destructive, incidental constructive action

Involves behaviour and skills development for norm compliance
Attainment & using of skills for independent & productive living
Develop necessary social, work, psychological, physical skills
Self-presentation → constructive explorative action.
Passive & Imitative Participation → experimental, imitative
3. What are the characteristics of Group 3 levels of CA?
Constitutes behaviour and skill development for self-actualization
