‭Prompt: Describe the qualities of ONE character and establish what this shows about‬

‭leadership‬

‭The Qualities of Ralph in‬‭Lord of the Flies‬‭that Establishes His Leadership‬

‭A leader is a role model who is understanding, passionate, and can motivate their‬

‭peers. When a leader both successfully possessives and employs those qualities through the‬

‭essence of each society's circumstance determines whether or not a leader would be‬

‭influential. This story is a cautionary tale about a group of boys stranded on a deserted island‬

‭with no adult supervision. It follows how they formulate their own laws to remain civil under‬

‭a chief whose strategy leads to slow deterioration of rational thinking toward savagery. In the‬

‭1954 dystopian novel,‬‭Lord of the Flies‬‭, by William Golding, Ralph shows the most‬

‭promising qualities of leadership as compared to the other boys, as seen through his ability as‬

‭a strong communicator, dependable leader, and transparency, which is communicated by‬

‭allegorical writing throughout the novel using foreshadowing and irony.‬

‭Firstly, the use of indirect characterization in order to present the notion of Ralph's‬

‭ability to strong communication influencing his leadership skills to the boys. In the‬

‭beginning, Jack expresses his slight frustration with not being able to catch food. Ralph then‬

‭initiates how they need specialized jobs in order to survive, “We need hunters to get us meat”‬

‭(33). This conveys the impression of how Ralph is able to think with a clear head and put his‬

‭emotions aside and focus on the goal of survival and how to becoming dependable. Ralph‬

‭builds the idea to the reader of how the reality of how he is originally swayed the majority of‬

‭the boys to vote for him as chief. Furthermore in the novel, Jack challenges Ralph and Piggy‬

, ‭2‬

‭and Ralph acknowledges Jack’s initiation of power but turns him down, “Where the conch is,‬

‭that’s a meeting” (42). This re-enforces the idea that Ralph was able to form a solid rule that‬

‭allowed for a system of governance to take place based on the principles of democracy. He‬

‭told the group exactly what was happening and provided much-needed stability for them to‬

‭have meetings and make plans for their survival and rescue. He organizes his speech and‬

‭what he needs to discuss in the assembly, “This meeting must not be fun, but business” (76).‬

‭This then establishes the idea that Ralph’s priorities and ideals are the strongest and most‬

‭secure out of everyone. While Jack is basking in his glory and the “littluns” (52) are playing‬

‭on the beach, Ralph is concerned for the whole group’s survival because he knows they‬

‭cannot live forever on the island. In summary, Ralph defines his ability to be a good leader‬

‭showing significantly more powerful communication skills than the others boys.‬

‭Furthermore, Ralph is able to establish his quality of reliability through the use of‬

‭allusions and characteristics as he shows persistence in improving the team and developing a‬

‭better environment displaying the most effective leadership skills compared to the others.. To‬

‭avoid conflict between the boys, Ralph jumps in and displays his superiority as he grabs the‬

‭conch away from Piggy, “Ralph took the conch from him and looked around the circle of‬

‭boys” (42). This reminds the reader of how Ralph is abiding by the rules and showing how he‬

‭does not abuse the power he holds and furthermore wants the group to form an agreement and‬

‭plans for survival as he is clinging to rational thinking and preventing humanity's innate‬

‭impulses from devolving into savagery. Additionally, as the boys discuss the beast, Ralph‬

‭takes initiative as the boys struggle to stay civil, “We can’t have proper assemblies if you‬

‭don’t stick to the rules” (90). This supports the previous analysis of Ralph’s willingness to‬

‭adhere to rules and remain adamant that they be followed correctly. He does not hold onto his‬
