- ANS-For my fellow Americans, there's even been increased attention around a
Federal Law.

In his keynote address on the first day of the International Conference of Data
Protection and Privacy Commissioners, Apple CEO Tim Cook not only professed total
support for a "GDPR-like" U.S. federal privacy law, but also called for his fellow tech
companies to do the same: "Some oppose any form of privacy legislation," Cook said.
"Others will endorse reform in public and undermine it behind closed doors."

Well, public endorsements quickly followed in Brussels. Facebook CPO Erin Egan was
asked if Facebook would support a a GDPR-like privacy law in the US and she replied,
unequivocally "Yes!"

Google General Counsel Ken Walker was asked about Google's position on a US Fed
Priv Bill and replied "Yes, we've been on the record for some time calling for
comprehensive privacy legislation in the past years." And commented on Google's
recent release of principles.

Finally, Microsoft corporate VP and deputy general Julie Brill, and former FTC
commissioner, made note that microsoft has extended many of the EU GDPR
protections to its entire customer base and has been a supporter since 2005.

So here we have it 4 of the top 7 tech companies in the word stood on the floor of the
European Parliament, in front the world's privacy regulators and endorsed a Federal Bill.
Are they undermining the effort in private? Who knows..
