Due 29 August 2024
1.1 Explain the following learning styles using your own understanding after
reading what literature says about them and give one example on how you are
going to teach learners with these different learning styles:
a. Tactile learners (5)
Tactile learners, often referred to as kinesthetic learners, are those who learn
best through hands-on experiences and physical interaction with their
environment. This type of learning style emphasizes the importance of touch and
movement in the learning process. Tactile learners often find it difficult to absorb
information through traditional methods like listening to lectures or reading
alone. Instead, they thrive when they can engage in activities that allow them to
‘learn by doing.’
Research suggests that tactile learners often benefit from activities that involve
building, manipulating, or experimenting. For example, they might enjoy using
tools or constructing models as part of their learning experience. In a classroom
setting, these learners may find it challenging to sit still for long periods, often
needing to be active or involved in practical tasks to stay focused and retain
information (Felder & Silverman, 1988).
One effective way to teach tactile learners is through project-based learning. For
instance, if we are teaching a science topic, such as ecosystems, I would organize
a hands-on project where students can create their own miniature ecosystem in a
jar. This activity would require them to gather materials, set up the environment,
and observe how it functions over time. By engaging in this practical task, tactile
learners would be able to grasp the concepts of ecosystems not just through
lectures or readings but by actively participating in the learning process.
