AICE MARINE SCIENCE EXAM
Questions and Answers
Outlining and Designing a laboratory experiment - Answer -State amount of containers
e.g. 5 tanks of each
State constants (at minimum 3) (light, temp., salinity, amount of water, how often results
are calculate, amount of exposure/days, etc.)
What is the amount of independent variable used? Pick a quantity suitable quantity for
the experiment.

describing results of an experiment - Answer -State the most with reference to data.
State the least with reference to data.
Manipulate date by finding range (difference of most and least).
State increases, decreases, increases then decrease, etc with reference to data.

Creating or working with graphs - Answer -Use the entire graph
Correctly label the x and y axes (with units)
Use CORRECT intervals. Use breaks to begin at certain number. Each interval is
equally spaced. (IE. 10,20,30). Use appropriate scales (to figure this out, take calculate
the range [highest number minus lowest] then divide the total number of spaces on the
graph by the range. This will give you your interval. (example: you have 40 spaces.
Highest value is 450 and the lowest is 50 ... 450-50 = 400 divided by 40 equals an
interval of 10 units per line).
When constructing a graph, make sure your scale is appropriate to show a relationship
... you may need to have values on the axis to the left AND to the right.
Plot all points correctly
Line of Best Fit - use a ruler to draw -- including (connecting) as many points as
possible, but it's not necessary that all points lie on the line. NOTE: Not all lines of best
fit go through zero.
ANSWERING QUESTIONS ABOUT GRAPHS
Be able to identify the interval value on the axis - know what each line represents.
STATE THE RELATIONSHIP - if there are two or more lines on one graph, state what
the relationship is between each (ie. as temperature increases, ocean acidity
decreases).

Symbiosis - Answer -remember that AICE looks at symbiosis and mutualism one in the
same. Symbiosis is a close relationship between 2 different species where both benefit.
Make sure you explain what both are getting/giving. Example: Coral and Zooxanthellae;
Tube worm & chemo. Bacteria

, Parasitism - Answer -is a relationship between two organisms where one, the parasite,
obtains benefit at the expense of the other, known as the host, which is usually harmed
by the relationship. Parasites obtain their nutrients from their host.

Producer - Answer -Green plants, algae and some types of bacteria are referred to as
producers as they are able to synthesise organic substances from simple inorganic
compounds, using light energy from the Sun, in the process of photosynthesis. That
means producers take in carbon dioxide and water and in the presence of sunlight
produce glucose and oxygen.
Chemosynthetic bacteria, such as those found associated with hydrothermal vents, are
able to produce glucose substances by oxidising hydrogen sulphide.

biodiversity - Answer -takes into account the numbers of different species present and
the range of habitats and ecosystems. Coral reefs, for example, have a high biodiversity
with many different species present, whereas a sandy shore has a low biodiversity as
there are relatively few different species in this habitat.

ecosystem - Answer -refers to living organisms and the physical and chemical factors
which influence them

population - Answer -consists of organisms of the same species, able to interbreed with
one another. For example, a population of ghost crabs (Ocypode saratan) living on a
sandy shore

community - Answer -includes all the different species living in a habitat at the same
time for example, the mollusc community on a rocky shore

Habitat - Answer -is the place where organisms live; for example, the area surrounding
a hydrothermal vent provides a habitat for species of tube worms and other specialised
organisms.

Trophic levels - Answer -refers to 'feeding levels' in a food chain, or a food web.
Producers occupy the first trophic level, primary consumers occupy the second trophic
level and secondary consumers occupy the third trophic level.

food chain - Answer -shows the sequence of organisms feeding on other organisms

arrows in a food chain - Answer -Transfer of Energy AND Biomass.

If given in a food web, be able to: - Answer -Name producers, primary, secondary,
tertiary or apex predators.
Explain what arrows between the organisms represent
Pick out a prey or predator of an organism on the food web.
State how many trophic levels are represented in a food chain.
