Persepolis Exam Questions With Correct
And Revised Answers

Marji - answer✔✔Marjane Satrapi is the narrator as well as the main character. story is about her
childhood in Iran before she moves to Austria. She lives through the Revolution and the war with
Iraq. She struggles throughout the book with finding her place in the world (obvi cause this is a
coming of age story). Does not think her father is a hero, possibly because he has not sacrificed
anything. She however does think that her uncle is a hero: Uncle Anoosh.

Taji Satrapi - answer✔✔Marji's mother. Taji involves herself in many protests that are very
dangerous for her to do. She is a very permissive mother, and wants her daughter to have a good
education. Grew up in poverty (The Shah took everything away from her parents when they sent
her father, who was the prime minister, to jail because he was a communist). When she went to
visit him he became very weak but would still play with her.

Eby Satrapi - answer✔✔Marji's father. He has five brothers, even though Uncle Anoosh is the
only one mentioned. His father sided with the Shah, while he and Anoosh detested the Shah.
Great supporter of the revolution. He does not believe in religious fundamentalism - strongly
against it). Very patriotic towards his country (Iran). Teaches Marji a lot about the revolution and
their countries history (shows how much he cares about the cause and his nation - it is very
important to him that Marji understands what is happening and why it is happening). He takes
pictures and captures the events of the Revolution even though it is illegal to. He is very smart
and he knows what is going on with his nation. He knows that the news in Iran covers up most
stories, so he mostly listens to the BBC broadcast on the radio.

Uncle Anoosh - answer✔✔Marjane's uncle. Her father's brother
In many ways Marji's hero. His uncle played a key role in the revolution. One of Eby (marji's
father)'s brothers. His uncle, Ferydoon, was part of a revolutionary movement separating
themselves and the region of Azerbaijan from the Shah. However, his father (marji's grandpa)
was still faithful to the Shah, and thought Anoosh was a trader. He defied his father and went to
live with his uncle and be his secretary. However, the Shah found them and captured Ferydoon,
and Anoosh fled back to his home. He was not safe at home with his parents because the Shah
was looking for him. He decided to go into exile and swam across the Aras river to the U.S.S.R..
Married a Russian woman but then got divorced. After he got divorced, he felt very lonely and
lost so he decided to go back home. He disguised himself but the Shah still recognized him and

captured him; was in prison for nine years. They tortured him. He tells Marji all of this because
he says it is important that their family history and the stories they have are never lost. He is
captured and imprisoned again. (Just after Mohsen and Siamak are chased after). Chooses Marji
as his only visitor; gives Marji a bread swan. Later he is executed "Russian Spy Executed" it said
on newspapers.

God - answer✔✔God is a friend of Marjane. During Marji's youth, he has a very close
relationship to her. Similar relationship as Marji and her grandmother. He listens to her, and does
not judge her. In the beginning of the story he could come and speaks to her every night. As she
grows up, she begins to lose faith, especially after Anoosh's execution.

Fereydoon - answer✔✔Fereydoon is Anoosh uncle and Marjane's great uncle. He proclaimed the
independence of Azerbaijan from the Shah. He elected himself minister of justice of this small
region. His idea was that justice is the basis of democracy. All men should be equal in the eyes
of the law. Anoosh became Fereydoon's secretary. The Shah captured him and he went to jail. He
was going to be executed, so the day before his girlfriend at the time wanted a lasting memory of
him, so they had a baby. (This is a big deal - unmarried mother)

Grandmother - answer✔✔mother of Taji. Listens to Marji. Says that she will be Marji's first
disciple. Was married to the prime minister/prince of Persia. (Marji's grandpa). She lived in
poverty because the Shah took everything they had. This means Marji's mother was also poor
growing up. (story told where she would boil water just so that the neighbors would think that
they were cooking something good, when in fact they didn't really have anything to eat). Took
up sewing.

Grandpa - answer✔✔father of Taji. was the prince of Persia. When the Shah overthrew his
father, who was the king, he was then named prime minister. This is because the Shah was not
well educated, and needed someone who was. Smart, he was an intellectual. When prime
minister, he started having conversations with other intellectuals and philosophers. He became a
communist, because he was ashamed that as prince he did not know a lot of the issues of the
various classes, and this upset him. He wanted everyone to be equal (to some extent). He did not
want people to be condemned to a "bleak" future just because of their class. Bc he was a
supporter of communism, he was put in prison. (Sometimes would be in a water cell for hours -
we see that Marji wants to understand what this is like so she draws herself a bath and lies in it
for hours until her skin becomes shriveled.) He became very sick in prison. (had rheumatism).

Ahmadi - answer✔✔Ahmadi was in prison with Jari and Moshen. Due to the fact the he was a
member of of the Guerrillas he suffered the worst torture. For example he was whipped very
badly, and burned with an iron, just so he could confess where the others were. In the end he was
cut to pieces.

Mehri - answer✔✔Mehri is Marjane's nanny and maid. Marji's family took her in because her
parents had too many children and could not support her. 10 years older than Marji. Scandal
when she falls in love with their neighbors son, Hossein. She pretends that she is Marji's real
