trade routes was flourishing. At the beginning of the time period malay sailors rode the monsoon

winds to China, there was a desire for cotton and sugar as well as a desire for silk and spices. As

time progressed, the construction of large and powerful states provided security for merchants

and travelers, which helped long-distance trade commerce.

Thesis: While the spread of ideas and goods remained constant, the empires dominating this

trade changed which led to the creation of new states as well as the eventual participation of
