, Purpose and Perspective of the Module
The purpose of this module is to introduce Unified Modeling Language (UML) diagrams, including their
components, their standard formatting, and, at an overview level, how they are used by professional
software developers. The module begins with a discussion of UML’s general purpose, then moves on to
describe class diagrams, use case diagrams, and sequence diagrams in turn through simple examples
that present and explain the major components of each. The module next extends its discussion of class
diagrams and depicts how various relationships—inheritance, dependence, aggregation, composition,
and realization—are represented in UML relationship diagrams. Finally, a C++ implementation of the
class shown in the module’s first UML diagram is presented as an example of how UML can be
translated into code.
