FAML 400 EXAM REPORTED
QUESTIONS WITH CORRECT
ANSWERS
In the article, The Deinstitutionalization of American Marriage, Cherlin argues that
marriage is weakening, and alternatives to marriage, such as cohabitation, are
increasing in popularity. Lauer and Yodanis argue that 90% of people still eventually
marry, and thus, marriage isn't going away any time soon. Based on Structure
Functionalism, if Lauer and Yodanis are right, then which of the following is true? -
Answer-There must still be many needs that the institution of marriage meets for
people.

There is a lot of tension in the Nophaun family. Mom is addicted to prescription pain-
killers, and Dad works hard to pick up the slack in the family. Their oldest son, Jason, is
constantly getting into trouble at school, and the parents are regularly called into the
principal's office. How is this family maintaining homeostasis? - Answer-Mom maintains
it by escaping through taking her medication.

Dad maintains it by being an enabler.

Jason maintains it by being a scapegoat.

All of the above.

Please give an example of a family situation and explain how these concepts could
work together in the family. The concepts are the following:
Homeostasis.
Positive and negative feedback loops.
Morphogenesis.
First and second order change.
In your answer, please bold or use all caps where you use each concept. - Answer-In
the Sound of Music, the family maintains homeostasis by following all of the fathers
orders and not talking about the loss of their mother. The new nanny comes in and
creates new positive feedback loops through trying to change the system. She uses the
positive feedback loop through singing with the children and using their names instead
of numbers. The father accepts this positive feedback loop when he walks into the
house and hears his children singing. He goes to the room they are in and joins them,
creating morphogenesis. This Morphogenesis happens when the system is entirely
changed for the better. The first and second order change is when the father accepts
their singing and does not scold or reprimand them for doing so.

, Pick two of the three following items and explain how they could be seen as a structure
in Structure Functionalism:
A wedding ring.
A single-parent family.
A pattern where mom is depressed and the kids avoid stressing her out. - Answer-A
single parent family can have structure functionalism by taking on both roles of nurturer
and provider. The structure in a family where the mother is depressed and the kids
avoid stressing her out creates homeostasis for them. It is not healthy but many family
structures function this way.

Using one of the three theories for this test (symbolic interactionism, structure
functionalism, or systems), explain the emergence of cohabitation as a new family type
as a response to the fact that so many young people are scared of marriage (or divorce
at least) and want to have sex and companionship without the commitment of marriage.
- Answer-Many people use symbolic interactionism to identify marriage as ending in
divorce. The emergence of cohabitation is that if there is a break up, it is less messy
than a divorce. There is also symbolic identification that cohabitation is not a legal
matter and therefore people do not need to meet financial committments.

Please answer one of the following essay questions (A or B below) and indicate which
question you choose:
Question A: In both functional and dysfunctional families, family members play certain
roles. However, in the alcoholic family, family members don't really get to choose their
role or when to play that role. Using one or two terms from the systems theory, describe
why and how this happens. - Answer-In an alcoholic family, there may be someone who
is numbing the pain of their family system by withdrawing from the family emotionally.
This only enables the alcoholic to be an enabler and continue their idea of homeostasis.
There may also be a child who is always causing trouble or acting as comic relief for the
family. They are thought of as the scapegoat.

Please describe a scenario that is an example of a negative or positive feedback loop.
Identify which type of loop you are using. - Answer-In the Sound of Music, the nanny
was creating positive feedback loop through singing with the children and calling the
children by their actual names and letting them play/ act as children. The nanny made
them feel more human and they responded positively when the nanny was around.

Which are the three types of basic family types defined by boundaries discussed in the
reading? - Answer-Open, random, closed

The assumption that any human system will resist change and that family members
tend to function best when things are in balance is representative of which of the
following theories? - Answer-structural functionalism theory

When discussing equilibrium, which of the following is most correct? - Answer-Family
members tend to function best when things are in balance.
