Engels boekje VWO2 the Hong Kong
connection

The name is Robert Scott, nickname is Bobby, he’s chief
superintendent of Police at Scotland Yard.
Scotland Yard, in London, is the headquarters of the
Metropolitan Police. There is a department for every kind of
crime. Robert works at the worst crimes, like murder and
kidnapping, when thing like that happen the Brittans Police ask
him for help.

Robert can often help them because the got a lot of information
about criminals. Sometimes police from foreign countries ask
for information. Sometimes I must ask them to help me. We’ve
got modern computers and we message very quickly. We aren’t
always able to catch every criminal but we never forget a crime
and we won’t stop until we catch the criminals.

Robert lives alone in a small house in Knightsbridge, in the
centre of London. Robert loves his house and his work. He
spends a lot of time in his office, it’s quit near his house.
When Robert was again at work instead of at home detective
chief John Lane called. (Chief detective in a police station in
Wimbledon, south London) They worked together and they are
still friends.
Mr Lane needs Robert’s help, he has an interesting job for him.
Lane told him that a railwayman found a body in the bushes
besides the line. He was wounded, and had a bullet in the back
of his head. He’s probably a criminal. Lane had a feeling that he
has seen him before. Robert went to Wimbledon.

When he arrived, Lane told him who the dead men are, he’s
Harry bond (49 years old), the cat burglar. Who lives an honest
live after he came out of prison five year ago. (Golders Green)
Lane called S’ district, they had no problem with him. They were
wonder how he mixed up with criminals who carry gun. Harry
never carries a gun himself. They go to
look at the place where they found his body.
A few policemen are searching the bushes. They thought
someone shot Harry, and put his body from the train told one of

, the policemen. One problem the line wasn’t in use. Robert says
he don’t thinks the murderer pushed him from the train in
daylight, someone would have seen him. Robert is very sure
someone shot harry somewhere else and then the body was put
by the railway line. And he thinks they can better called S’
district to search Harry’s home.

London is divided in 23 police districts. Each district has a letter
from the alphabet, without the letters ‘U’ and ‘I’ and ‘O’.
Golders Green is ‘S’.

At the tops of the stairs was detective sergeant Hawkins waiting
with the key of Harry’s house. The house was a mess;
- Chairs upside down
- Books, papers, pictures on the ground
- TV set was damaged
- Clothes lay in a pile on the bed
- Fridge was open. Ice was melted
- Broken pieces of cups, saucers, plates, glasses
Hawkins was going to search the house, and Robert will talk to
some of his neighbours. Robert knocked on the second door.
There opens a woman with grey hair the door just a little. She
looks nervous. She told Robert she saw him hardly. He had no
job, they have several jobs but he never kept them. She saw
him ¾ days ago. She heard loudly noises, the sound of
furniture falling down. She thought he was drunk again. Robert
gave his number so she can call if she remembers the exact
day.

Hawkins had found Harry’s passport. Harry’s photograph was
real but his name was false. There was one stamp inside. Six
month ago, he left to Hong Kong. It was weird he can go to
Hong Kong without a job. There were two books from the
library about Hong Kong said Hawkins. the return day was last
Friday so he had them more than three weeks. Robert wonder
why he reads a book about Hong Kong if he already had been
there. Robert thanked Hawkins, took the books and asked him
to telephoned him next day.
Back in Scotland Yard Robert got all the information about
Harry, his friends and people from prison. Only two of his
friends were not back in prison;
 Thomas Hill, no address or work.
