IncarceratedI laid on the thin well-worn mattress I’ve called my bed for the past 4 years, staring up at the cracked
sealing waiting for the voice that I hear every evening.
‘’Good evening prisoners, it is six o’clock. Please make your way to the dining hall.’’
As I hear the glass cell doors slowly slide open I make my way towards the dining hall and wait in line
with a dining tray to get my food.
‘’Next.’’ I hear the usual robotic voice say. As I move towards the voice and hold out my tray, a soggy
mess of mashed potatoes is plunged onto it along with some beans, a cup of vegetables and some
beef. I look at the food in front of me with disgust before I hear a loud robotic voice again, ‘’Next.’’ I
make my way to my usual seat at the end of the dining hall. As I sit down with my tray I stare at the
food in front of me for a while before sliding some of the beans into my mouth.
‘’Hey.’’ I hear a voice say, making my head shoot up. ‘’Hey.’’ I say while the boy in front of me is
making himself comfortable on his seat with a dining tray that looks as disgusting as mine.
‘’How are you feeling? You look exhausted.’’
‘’Thanks.’’ I laugh. ‘’I just didn’t sleep well last night, they seriously need to replace those
mattresses.’’
‘’It’s not like you’ll use them after tonight.’’ He laughs before looking me in the eye.
‘’Are you ready?’’
‘’More than ready. I can’t wait to get out of this place.’’
The dining hall was slowly filling with inmates. I studied all of them. All of them were here for a
reason. Just like me. Four years ago I was a journalist in Detroit. I always wanted to be a journalist, to
tell stories of people that for some reason couldn’t tell them their selves, to inform people about
what was going on in the world, but most importantly, to tell the truth and that’s what got me in
here, telling the truth, or at least I tried. Detroit has become a non-democratic country since a group
of rich people took over the power a few years ago. Laws changed, a lot of corruption appeared and
people got scared. Journalists in Detroit didn’t have any freedom anymore, all media got controlled
by the government. When I tried to leak an article about what was happening here the government
found out and incarcerated me in one of Detroit’s highly secured prisons.
‘OK Aiden, you know the plan right? Everything needs to go exactly as planned for this to work. It
needs to be perfect.’’ I tell the inmate in front of me. ‘’I know Em, Liam just needs to distract the
robots long enough so we can slip out and get to the security room. We’ll be out of this place tonight,
I promise.’’
We’ve been planning this for a year now. When I came to this place I didn’t talk to anyone for three
years. I didn’t trust anyone, I kept to myself and made sure not to draw any attention to myself. After
two years someone got transferred to the cell in front of me, Aiden Rivers. We never spoke until the
day he suddenly came sitting with me at breakfast. He told me how he got into this place, by hacking
the government to leak information, but he got caught. He’s been in here for six years now. Since
that day we sat together for breakfast and dinner every day and it made my life in here a little less
miserable.
