Beatrice (Tris) is sixteen years old and lives in the future Chicago. In this time, Chicago is separated in
5 fractions: Dauntless, Amity, Erudite, Abnegation and Candor. Tris, her parents and brother live in
Abnegation. On one day of every year, all sixteen-year olds have to take a test, this test will tell them
in which of the five fractions they belong. After taking this test the youngsters have to decide where
they want to spend the rest of their lives. So Tris also had to take this test, but she has no good
result. Tris is divergent, which means she is different from the rest. And that is not accepted in this
world. This means she has to decide as a normal teenager. Despite of her family in Abnegation, she
chooses Dauntless. After the choosing process she immediately gets taken away from her family and
she gets taken to dauntless, together with the others who chose this fraction and a few people who
already are dauntless. Before she becomes a real dauntless, she first has to go to a rough training
process together with the other new teens. At the end of every training fase there is a ladder. In this
ladder the 2 who are the lowest get thrown out and become fractionless, that means you don’t
belong to any fraction and you have to live on the street. Frist Tris is a bit low on the ranking, but she
fights super hard to get higher. In Dauntless Tris also meets Four (Thobias) he is one of the leaders in
Dauntless and she falls in love with him. He helps her getting stronger and smarter. And when she
finds out he is also a divergent (he already found out she is), Four starts teaching her how to hide
that you’re different. Tris has to learn this because she had to pass the final test, the test that tells
you if you are a real Dauntless. But that’s not her biggest problem. Erudite and Abnegation get in a
war. Abnegation has the power of the community because they always put themselves in last place.
But now Erudite wants power too. Erudite is a very smart fraction and creates a serum that can
manipulate people. With this serum they can make Dauntless people braindead, which means that
they obey the Erudites. Only divergents stay normal when under influence of the serum. So if you
behave different than the manipulated ones, you get killed. She and four try to act like the others
and try to save the parents of Tris. But unfortunately both of her parents die in the war. Tris is very
upset but at the end she can escape with Four.
