• Role of theory in research?
-to make predictions, what is likely to see in a given study
-use different kind of theories, theories (often wrong) but closes thing to make assumptions for
future (make predictions what will be see in data), study show if the theory makes real
prediction in a new domain
-theory shows which variables are important
• Predict behaviour?
-for soft science (social) many variables therefore it is difficult to mathematical models to make
predictions
-soft science are harder than hard science in terms of the effort it takes to take the variables in
place
• People learn from theory and behave like this? Sounds dangerous in political a science, every
theory you propose becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy
-yes self-fulfilling prophecy, depend have every learned about your theories, maybe you have a
better chance that a theory I consisted if a never publish it (paradox)

• normally the participants talk more then expected, they open up when researcher give
them attention
• a lot of responsibility for researcher
• can ask difficult question, but stay away from bring people into crisis (but no rules for that)

• We do not know why influence is them
• Qualitative methods follow on quantitative patterns you observed?
-depend, have relationship in mind, tested it, go into field and speak with participants
(deductive)
-other time are open minded with grounded theory and try to abstract slowly relationship
(inductive)
-sometimes mix(abductive) relationship in mind, use experience of participants and explain
relationship and add to those
• Difficult to act as a researcher to make it objective?
-things like constructs are context and time depended, therefore do not seek for objectivity but
for localized understanding,
• Findings are relevant to context and not generalized, how move on with a field?
-collect different findings, and try to understand the role of the context, as researcher more
abstract and on level up

-yes, to see problems of them, to make bridge to their needs and translate into theoretical

-provide theoretical contribution, make everyone happy, development of trust

-ultimately to advance knowledge, deliverer impact (findings can be generalized and

when he didn’t find something they can try something different or look for patters in the data
