theories related to how we can build trust. Assess the issues in building trust.
P2
In a care setting there are several personal skills and attributes that are essential to vulnerable
individuals. People skills should be used by a health care professionals such as problem
solving when caring for individuals this skill means that you have a situation and you can
find an alternative that suits the needs of an individual such as Nusrat, she has learning
difficulties and so she finds it hard to learn. They used problem solving as they produced
Makaton sheets for her. It shows people skills because you are allowing her to participate and
to help her learn giving her an equal opportunity. Another skill that has been used is patients,
this means that you are remaining calm in a situation and to have the time to wait. Patients is
shown in Nusrats case study as they use patients with her progress, it takes her a long time to
get the grasp of things and so by using this people skill they will provide trust between the
relationship between the carer and Nusrat and it will also promote her independence.
Building trust has also been used. This means you are showing one another you can trust each
other- for an example, if someone tells you something you can show them trust by not telling
other people. This is shown in Nusrats case study as her and the manager are building trust so
they can keep an eye on who she is talking to because Nusrat builds trust too easily and so
they 7are helping a vulnerable individual as she may get into danger if she puts her trust into
people she doesn’t really know. Empathy is also shown when Nusrat goes to the toilet.
Empathy means feeling how they would feel and it was shown here because they are using
discursion when she goes to the toilet, it also uses rust as Nusrat will trust you if you don’t
tell people. This is important because it will allow carers to understand particular behaviours
and feelings. Flexibility is when you are available at all times to support needs and can adapt
resources. It is shown with Nusrats case study as they provide Makaton sheets for her and
they show this people skill as they are adapting their resources to help Nusrat learn as she
finds it difficult to do so. There are also carers there to help her in case she has an epileptic
fit, they are adapting to suit her needs as it means she will be looked after just in case, this
also shows problem solving. This is important to Nusrat as it will promote safety and with the
Makaton sheets it’ll develop her independence. They also use negotiation when talking of her
care plan. Negotiation is having two ideas merged together to make one big idea where
everyone is happy, here, they use this in her care plan by involving her mum and the
carers/volunteers and herself so any ideas will be listened to and put together to create a plan
where everyone is happy. They can use honesty to tell her if they can or cannot provide
something. Honesty is about telling the truth and not to lie to an individual. It can equal to
trust and reassurance in the individual, such as Nusrat, and could change their lifestyle to
make it better. To promote sense of humour they could joke about her being too trusting, so
instead of telling her off about putting too much trust in people, do it in a jokey manor so she
could figure it out.
In a care setting there are several personal skills and attributes that are essential to vulnerable
individuals. A professional should use people skills such as problem solving when caring for
an individual such as Martin. Martin was left redundant and has a worsening skin condition
1
, however, he gets a lot of help from his carpentry instructor, debt adviser and his G.P. they
used problem solving to make alternative arrangements for his reading and skin. They use
problem solving as they are helping him get another job and helping him get his skin get
better. Another people skill is building trust from his G.P. The G.P. has helped him by
listening to him and taking his problems into account, he has used his empathy by
understanding his current state and referred him to the dermatologist which has provided
medication to get better. Another skill they have used is honesty as the carpentry told Martin
that if he continued his classes that his skin condition may worsen, this was good because
they didn’t keep it from him and told him something to prevent further damage to his health
which builds trust between them. The debt adviser showed flexibility towards him as they
made time to see him on Thursday mornings which shows negotiation with time as it is
efficient for both users. Another example of negotiation and patients is that the centre
management sees he is distress and offers alternatives to his care plan. The housing people
show empathy because they see that Martin isn’t working due to his current health state and
his redundancy and has made his rent lower. This will help Martin as it’ll lead to less stress
equalling to a better recovery. They also used a sense of humour as they made him feel more
relaxed and reassuring by helping him get his CV up but they’re not stressing over it.
In a care setting there are several personal skills and attributes that are essential to vulnerable
individuals. A professional should use people skills such as problem solving when caring for
an individual such as Alice. Alice lost her husband due to cancer which cause a massive
impact on her due to the unexpected life event. Because of this Alice became depressed and
has taken on alcohol which has become a worsening problem. The G.P. has used problem
solving in this matter as he said instead of going to the aerobics session which is making her
feel worse as they make her stand away from the rest, to go to the Alcoholics Anonymous to
talk about her problems with people who are going through the same thing. This also shows
empathy because he is understanding why she drinks and is advising her to attend something
that he’ll know will help her. Another people skill that the G.P. used was he showed building
trust as Alice use to feel that he didn’t understand her needs but the G.P. showed her different
as he listened and found that her situation was serious and organised an appointment with a
nutritionist. He also showed honesty as he told her about the concern of her current state but
showed empathy. Flexibility was also used because the G.P. and the nutritionist are making
time for her.
Professionals should use communication when caring for Nusrat. Communication is the
exchange of information between two or more people that helps to provide care and support.
They show this in Nusrat’s care plan as they invite Nusrat’s mother and her carers into her
care plan meaning they would have face to face discussions about her care plan and what’s
best for Nusrat. They also used competence, this means they understand a person’s needs,
combined with expertise and knowledge to deliver effective care to meet the needs. They do
this with Nusrat as they provide her with the Makaton sheets because they understand that
due to her learning difficulties its harder for her to learn and so they show that they are
understanding her needs. They also used compassion as her G.P. referred her to an epilepsy
specialist as they wanted to help her more. Compassion means that they are aware of Nusrat’s
needs and have the desire to help them. This is important because it means Nusrat can get
better or learn to deal with her epilepsy. They also use care as the nurse will assist Nusrat
when she goes to the bathroom but will use discursion. Care means you are looking after and
