P4: EXPLAIN APPROPRIATE RESPONSES WHEN CHILD MALTREATMENT OR
ABUSE IS SUSPECTED

In this task i'll be explaining the responses or steps that should be taken when a child
maltreatment or abuse is suspected

Procedures where abuse is suspected or confirmed

POLICIES OF THE SETTING
People working with children and young people who are most likely vulnerable
should be aware of the policies and procedures of the setting .This will provide clear
guidelines on what an employer should do if they suspect abuse. These policies must
be accessible and available to those who would like to read it . Most care settings
now make it important for professionals to sign once they have acknowledged these
policies to prove that they are aware . This protects the company and the employees
,certifying that a common practice is enforced in all situations . These policies are
important because without them employees will not be knowledgeable about what to
do when a case of child maltreatment or abuse comes up in the setting .
If specific steps are not taken in the case of Joe it might result in no one knowing
about what happened to Joe because it wasn’t reported putting Joe in more risk . Not
following the policies could also mean the current case of Joe compromised because

,employees were unknowledgeable or perhaps did something wrong such as losing
the evidence or discussing the case to an individual who’s not linked to the case .

LINES OF REPORTING

The policy will usually state the most appropriate person to report to. Usually in a
care setting your manager is the appropriate person who may then report to social
services . The procedure of the setting will usually identify the procedures of
reporting in scenarios where abuse is confirmed or suspected .It’s important that
these procedures are accurately obeyed or the case against the suspected or actual
abuser will be compromised.
Wishing a care or educational environment, the procedures often involve reporting to
the manager or the individual supervising the facility ,whose duty it is to then contact
the necessary authorities.
In Joe’s situation, noticing that the person who dropped him off has never been seen
dropping him before , this information should be reported and written down and kept
safely . And after noticing the burn on his head it’s important to report to the manager
because Joe could be at risk or probably being physically abused .

ACCURATE REPORTING
All the information should be documented accurately, as it may later be called upon
as Evidence. All written reports should be read thoroughly to make sure there's no
doubt in present and that all the information is logged in accurately, containing no
assumptions and judgements. This is extremely important to follow astraying from
these strict policies could mean the comptonization of the case. This could mean that
a potential abuser may not be charged and would be free to continue abusing others
. These arrangements must be followed accurately as even small mistakes could be
dangerous to the investigation. For example, when writing a statement,by saying ‘ I
100% identified the abuser as John Smith ‘ this states that you could identify the
individual, this is okay if it were true , but if you were not 100% sure you could
potentially be accusing an individual who wasn’t involved . When writing a report
about Joe make sure you’re writing the accurate things because making a mistake

, could be jeopardising Joe's case , do not assume and carefully listen to Joe and
make sure there’s no doubt in his statement .

SECURITY OF RECORDS
It’s extremely important that all records are stored safely and securely and are only
made accessible to authorized personnel and those who must view them at a
professional capacity.
It's critical that all documents are kept safely and securely, and that only approved
staff and those who need to see them in a professional capacity have access to
them. The value of preserving confidentiality cannot be overlooked. Since the record
could be used in court, betraying confidentiality may result in a police investigation
and indictment. The security of records is critical.
The security of records is extremely important for the safety and security of the
victim. For example, if an employee were to link sensitive information , such as the
address of an abused victim this could attract unwanted media attention to the
address which is not what a traumatised victim or distressed family would want . It
could also in more severe cases attract the individual who’s accused of causing
further harm to the victim.
This procedure corresponds with the DATA PROTECTION ACT 1998 which was
kept in place to safeguard the use of people’s information.
In Joe’s situation it’s essential you keep every information about him confidential
because that might bring more harm than good.

A PLACE OF SAFETY
In any setting if noticed that a child or young person has been acting unusual or
sleeps at school , fresh bruises and marks , this is a sign that the child might be
abused . When noticed you have to firstly make sure the situation is reported and the
child is moved to a safe place .
In relation to Joe , it’s important that the signs are reported and he’s moved to a safe
environment till he’s proved to be safe because it could be an accident but if it’s
