, QUESTION 1
1.1 Nomsa’s Current Adulthood Stage and The Psychological Tasks
Associated with Her Career Life Stage
Nomsa is 25 and is currently in the early adulthood, also called the exploration phase.
This stage is the transfer from adolescence towards being a young adult where a
person starts exploring different work options to decide on a career path and
developing that career (Coetzee, Roythorne-Jacobs, & Mensele, 2016)
The following are the core psychological tasks and challanges that are associated with
the early adulthood career stage (Coetzee et al., 2016):
• Pre-early adulthood (emerging adulthood) life stage (17 – / 30 years)
• Crystalling the self-concept by exploring one’s identity in the areas of love, work
and worldviews: trying out various life possibilities and moving toward enduring
decisions
• Dealing with quarter life crises ( / 30 years)
• Achieving independence and responsibility toward self
• Developing self-reliance or autonomy
• Early adulthood (establishment) life stage ( / 30 – 45 years)
• Establishing one’s vocational / career identity and career anchor (self-perceived
talents and abilities, motives, attitudes and values)
• Constructing an identity narrative (career identity) over time with life and work
experiences and revising / adjusting the identity narrative
• Finding a place in and contributing to society; becoming a responsible young
adult
• Making an impact on one’s environment – advancing in one’s career
• Becoming established in an occupation and in family life (work-family balance
and security)
• Developing intimacy, becoming committed and involved, developing stable
affiliations
• Developing career competency, career self-efficacy and career adaptability
