FOR3701 ASSIGNMENT 2
SEMESTER 1 - 2022
UNIQUE NUMBER: 820908
DUE DATE: 4 APRIL 2022
, QUESTION 1
Discuss different types of surveillance techniques.
1.1. Introduction:
In the developed and in parts of the developing world, surveillance societies have started to
emerge. Surveillance societies are societies which function, in part, because of the extensive
collection, recording, storage, analysis and application of information on individuals and
groups in those societies as they go about their lives. Retail loyalty programmes, website
cookies, national identity schemes, routine health screening and no-fly lists all qualify as
surveillance. Each features, in different measure, the routine collection of data about
individuals with the specific purpose of governing, regulating, managing or influencing what
they do in the future. This is our understanding of surveillance.
In this essay, we will define & outline the various types of surveillance with applicable
examples.
1.2. Definition of Surveillance:
Surveillance is the secret (covert) watching of persons, places or objects (Gilbert 2010:534).
Surveillance is the covert observation of objects, subjects and places while undercover. It is
the most important method of data collection for further investigative purposes either for
disciplinary or criminal investigation reasons. Surveillance might also serve as crime
prevention strategy.
