1.2. Poverty, affects children in a lot of ways. Poverty affects their education,
exposure to language, access to services, mental health, socio development,
emotional development, self-esteem and also their physical development. Later on
these affects will cause problem and then it affects their development as a child.
They will struggle and will not go far as a learner. For example, children will
experience low self-esteem or even depression and will later on use drugs to feel
better or they will not do good in school, because they do not have access to various
services.
Health problems, like HIV and diabetes ext. may affect the learners physical and
cognitive development negatively. For example, if a learners has HIV they will not be
physically strong and will suffer in school. They will have a hard time in school
because of their illness.
Abuse, there are a lot of types of abuse. Abuse causes violent behaviour, brain
damage, low self-image and the learner will have a difficult time fitting in. These
children are most likely to be bullies because of the abuse at home. For example, if
the learners is been emotional abuse at home, they will then do the same at school.
Racism, is the discrimination against people because they belong to a certain racial
group. Racism is a form of abuse and happens in a lot of schools. Racial abuse can
cause emotional difficulties and behavioural difficulties which influences their
development as a learner. For example, when a leaners is been racially abuse they
are more likely to become depressed and will struggle to grow and develop what
needs to be developed.
Stress can be caused by a lot of things. To much stress can be harmful to children’s
health and development. For example, when a child has high level of stress it causes
damage in cognitive functioning and these children can easily get sick.
