The teacher has chosen to TEXT A passage for grade 12 learners. The school is in
an affluent suburb in Midrand, Gauteng. Learners in this grade are approximately aged
17-19 years of age. This means that their reading and comprehension skills are at the
peak. They should be able to understand TEXT A easily. The learners are doing
English as their home language, they should be able to understand unfamiliar or
difficult words in the passage. Furthermore, the school uses English as a medium of
communication and learning and learners are expected to speak English when
communication with their peers. Learners are very fluent when reading. Learners
come from diverse cultural, economic, religious, and racial backgrounds. TEXT A is
very suitable for the learners because they also learners come from diverse
multilingual and multicultural groups. Therefore, they will be able to relate to what is
happening in TEXT A.

Activity 1: listening skills

Prescribed text: A matter of taste (TEXT A)
Lesson outcomes/objectives: Learners should be able to:
1. Distinguish between the main ideas and supporting ideas and sentences.
2. Compare the two main characters’ perspective (Whites and coloured).

- Picture of two boys, one being White and the other coloured hugging each other

, Description of the activity:
During the pre-listening phase, two pictures of the boys, white and coloured will be
shown on the projector. One picture will be when the boys cannot play with each other
due to the fence separating them and the second picture will be the boys hugging each
other and playing. Learners will be given 5 minutes to think and predict what the picture
is about. The teacher will then write the name of the title on the white board using a
marker. The teacher will then instruct learners to make a link between the pictures
they just saw and the title of TEXT A. This will be followed by the teacher facilitating a
class discussion about what the text is about. Learners are expected to raise their
hands if they want to share their ideas and opinions with the rest of the class.
During the while-listening phase, no writing will be allowed. Learners are expected to
sit down and listen attentively and for comprehension while the teacher is reading the
passage slowly and loudly to ensure that all learners are paying attention. Once the
teacher has read the passage, learners will be instructed to write down their answers
on the exercise book about the text.

Assessment
A formal assessment will be conducted. The teacher will mark learners exercise books
and give them marks. While marking, the teacher will look at how learners were able
to understand the essence of the passage and if they were able to compare the
characters and give examples.
