‘The Netcare Group invests in growing and continually improving their capabilities and
capacity.’ Make a judgement with regards to the absorptive capacity of Netcare. In your
answer, you need to explain the meaning of absorptive capacity and apply the dimensions
thereof to Netcare’s systems and processes. (10 marks, of which 2 marks will be awarded
to the explanation of absorptive capacity, and 8 marks to the application of the dimensions
thereof to Netcare’s systems and processes. PLEASE NOTE, you need to explain each
dimension first and then apply it to Netcare.
Absorptive capacity refers to an organization's ability to acquire, assimilate, transform and
exploit new knowledge in order to enhance its capacity for innovation and improve its
performance. This includes the organization's ability to recognize the value of new external
information, assimilate it into its existing knowledge base, and apply it to commercial ends. The
dimensions of absorptive capacity include acquisition, assimilation, transformation, and
exploitation.
In terms of acquisition, Netcare has demonstrated a strong ability to acquire new knowledge
and capabilities through its continuous investment in the latest medical technologies and high-
level professional expertise. This is evident in the company's expansion from operating four
hospitals in 1996 to now having 51 hospitals, demonstrating its ability to acquire new resources
and knowledge to expand its capacity and capabilities.
With regards to assimilation, Netcare has shown its capability to integrate and understand new
information and knowledge into its existing systems and processes. For example, the
company's investment in training campuses and partnerships with healthcare professionals
demonstrate its ability to assimilate new knowledge and expertise into its operations.
In the dimension of transformation, Netcare has shown its capacity to internalize and apply new
