The SEND code of practice is a widely used piece of policy that is used in
schools that highlights the legal requirements of supporting these with
additional needs and disabilities. This policy is used to support children
who have additional needs and disabilities in their learning environments,
explains how to work with other professionals in supporting the children
for joint outcomes and how to support the children further in their life. It
outlines what is required of teachers, headteachers, schools and other
services supporting these children as part of the Children and Families Act
2014. The policy is an important element of supporting children with
additional needs and disabilities in ensuring that they have access to the
same level of education as other children, teachers must follow this policy
to ensure this as stated within the policy, ‘they must fulfil their statutory
duties towards children and young people with SEN or disabilities in the
light of the guidance set out’ (Department for Education and Department
of Health, 2015, p.12). The National Health Service (NHS) work closely
with schools in supporting children with SEND and state that their work is
to ‘make sure that children and young people are at the heart of
everything we do’ (2014) in line with the SEND code of practice aims and
