September 2024
, QUESTION 1 [15 marks]
1.1 Personal Characteristics of an Effective Teacher Counsellor
To be an effective teacher counsellor, certain personal characteristics are essential.
3. Empathy
This characteristic involves the ability to understand and share the feelings of
others. An empathetic teacher counsellor can create a safe environment where
students feel heard and valued. By actively listening and responding to students'
emotions, the counsellor fosters trust and openness, which are crucial for
effective counselling.
4. Patience
Working with children and adolescents can sometimes be challenging, as they
may struggle to articulate their thoughts or feelings. A patient counsellor takes
the time needed to allow students to express themselves without feeling rushed.
This patience can help build rapport and encourage students to engage more
fully in the counselling process.
5. Integrity
Integrity involves being honest and maintaining ethical standards in all
interactions. A teacher counsellor with integrity is reliable and trustworthy, which
helps establish a positive relationship with students. Students need to feel
confident that their counsellor will respect their confidentiality and act in their best
interests.
