Life processes
1. What are Life Processes?
● Life processes are the basic functions that help living organisms to stay alive.
● These include:
● Nutrition
● Respiration
● Transportation
● Excretion
Key points: Life processes are essential for growth, reproduction, and maintenance of
the body.

2.Nutrition
Defination
The process of taking food and converting it into energy is nutrition.
Type of Nutrition
1. Autotrophic Nutrition:
● Green plants make their own food using sunlight, carbon dioxide and water
(photosynthesis). This process is called autotrophic nutrition and such
organisms are called autotrophic organisms. This process also happens in some
bacteria.
● Equation:
6CO₂ + 6H₂O → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂
[Carbon dioxide + water → (Sunlight) glucose + oxygen]
2. Heterotrophic Nutrition:
● The organisms which depend on others (autotrophic organisms) for food are
called heterotrophic organisms and this process is called heterotrophic nutrition.
● Type:
● Holozoic: Humans and animals (eating solid food).
● Parasites: Leech-like organisms that are dependent on a host.
● Saprophytic: Fungi feed on dead matter.
3.Respiration
Defination:
The process of breaking down glucose obtained from food into energy is called
respiration.
Types of Respiration:
1. Aerobic respiration:
● Oxygen is required.
