,Chapter 1:
Point of View / Characters Focused On
• Jake Mulligan’s point of view
• First person POV
Summary of chapter
The narrator describes Cape Town’s Mitchell’s Plain and its inhabitants. It is described as a beautiful,
full moon night, yet the narrator is “bone-scared”. Jake Mulligan and his partner, Detective Charlie
Adams, are going to No.1189 Fortuin Street. They are there to do a night-raid at the gun-dealers
house. They are both hesitant to go in because it is a full-moon, and the moon is usually so bright
“you could see the colour of your killer’s eyes”.
Extra Notes:
Setting: Mitchell’s Plain
“The moon floated high above the corrugated iron roofs of the matchbox houses of Mitchell’s Plain”
Chapter 2:
Point of View / Characters Focused On
• Jake Mulligan’s point of view
• First Person POV
Summary of chapter
When Jake and Charlie arrive at the house and knock on the door, the occupants start to run and
scatter. Inside Jake finds two AK47-rifles, five or six handguns, and a four-gauge pump shotgun. Jake
chases after two of the suspects and they ran towards some bushes at the back of the property.
After firing some bullets at Jake, the two suspects moved further away from the suburb and more
towards the back of the property, to the wetlands. Once they reached the wetlands the suspects
were able to hide and escape.
Charlie came with the vehicle towards Jake when Jake spotted something lying in the bushes. After
having Charlie turn the vehicle around and illuminate the area, Jake saw that it was the body of a
young child lying in the bushes.
From several quotes of Jake Mulligan, we can see that he struggles to deal with any type of death
and seeing the death of a child has only made it worse. He continues to think of what a younger
version of himself would have looked like if he were to be lying there. Jake immediately phones an
operator to demand that people should be sent out to investigate the crime scene.

, Jake surveys the crime scene before it’s “contaminated by the teams of first response officers”. He
takes notice of all the small details and talks to the people from the neighbourhood who had
gathered to stare at the crime scene.
While talking to the ‘gawkers’ Jake thinks about how long it will take until someone notifies the
press, in which he is reminded that he should call Kate. It is revealed that Kate has her own key to his
cottage in Observatory. He calls her and briefly apologizes that he is late. She says that it is fine and
that he can wake her up when he gets back. This shows that she is very understanding and caring,
she understands that his career is important to him. When she hangs up Jake realizes that he can’t
say what she wants to hear (the words “I love you too”), and that he probably won’t be able to give
her what she wants out of the relationship.
After the phone call Jake goes back to the crime scene. He notes how the faces of the men working
the crime scene are unusually grim. A while after Colonel Jackson Sondile arrived at the crime scene.
Jake informed him on the crime scene and what they have found. Jake reveals that there are signs of
a struggle, and that the scene is about four to seven days old. The child was dragged there, stripped
from his clothes, sexually assaulted, and then strangled to death. When Jake told Sondile that the
child’s feet were amputated Sondile immediately rushed towards where the mortuary attendants
had zipped up the body bag. When he opened the body bag, he revealed that it was a muti-killing.
Chapter 4:
Point of View / Characters Focused On
• Focus on the fourteen rugby boys at Helderkloof High School
• Third person narrator
Summary of chapter
We are introduced to the Helderkloof High School rugby team. They are sitting in the changing room,
yet their tog bags lay unopened, and their rugby boots are still huddled under the wooden benches.
They are all silent and avoid eye-contact with each other.
On the Friday morning school assembly had begun as normal. The cheerleaders were to meet at the
gates of the swimming pool to discuss the upcoming rugby clash with their rival school. But when
they came closer, they found Francois J. Opperman’s body floating face down in the swimming pool.
The boys finally start voicing their thoughts on the death of Frankie, and later they begin arguing and
accusing Lovuyo of murdering Frankie. Marcus tries to be the voice of reason and defends Lovuyo.
The boys continue arguing and shouting at each other about who they think did it. Some suspicion
arises when they mentioned that it is their fault. They keep mentioning something happening on a
particular night, and that none of them thought it would go that far.
The boys begin to panic when they start thinking of the police investigating the murder. They panic
because the police would ask who Frankie’s friends was, as well as who was his enemies. They know
that they would each be questioned and inevitably one of them would slip up. Davey says something
interesting about someone called ‘Budgie’ and how they made a deal to sort it all out. Marcus
immediately starts to question everyone if they had told anyone. This is quite a change from how he
behaved earlier.
Tromp, the rugby coach, came in and told them to hurry up. He also informed the boys that Lovuyo
has been moved up and is their new eighth man. Lovuyo walked in and didn’t seem fazed at all at
