Division of labour between the two hemispheres is called lateralization. The corpus callosum is the
part of the brain that connects the two hemispheres and exchanges information through is collection
of axons. If you have no corpus collosum your left hemisphere could only react to information from
your right side and your right hemisphere could only react to information from your left side. Only
after damage to the corpus collosum do we see evidence of lateralization.
The anatomical differences between hemispheres
the planum temporale is bigger in the left hemisphere than in the right. The hemispheres differ from
the moment we are born. Optic chiasm: part of the brain where the optic nerves cross.
The auditory system is organised differently, each ear sends information to both hemispheres
because any brain area that contributes to localizing sounds must compare input from both ears. But
each hemisphere does pay more attention to the ear on the opposite side.
Corpus callosum and the split-brain operation
damage to the corpus callosum prevents the hemispheres from exchanging information. Severing the
corpus callosum affects certain other aspects of behaviour and personality, such as difficulty
performing tasks with two hands that the person has never done before.
The right hemisphere
- More responsible for the emotional stimuli, such as perceiving emotions in people’s voice or
gestures.
- People with damage to the right hemisphere usually have trouble understanding humour
and sarcasm.
- And inactive right hemisphere causes people to not feel strong emotions or to not remember
having them. (e.g., wife threatens man and he says he didn’t feel threatened)
